All the while there is a physician shortage in Canada (1/4 do not have access to PCP, waiting lists are getting longer, etc..).

The point is that Canada is not fully honest with its immigrants. Canadian foreign missions should very clearly state on immigration applications that the professional qualifications of immigrants are unlikely to be accepted, especially in medicine, despite the point system that allows them to immigrate.
Oh, that is dissapointing then. So what should be done? Adopt the US system? write a little disclaimer? Would the difference in healthcare system be the cause (i.e Private verses public?), instead of canadian treachery as I am still adiment to admit.

i'm canadian, and i love this country. but when it comes down to the severe doctor shortage we have, and the treatment of img's (especially canadian citizens who studied abroad), i get sick to my stomach. the entire system just doesn't make any sense to me. hopefully in time, this will change, but i'm not holding my breath. i thank god there is the u.s. so that i can accomplish my dream of practicing medicine.

Well, considering that you are merely a premed, I'm really not surprised by your response.

Read canadianstudent888's response above. Perhaps, you can educate yourself about the problems inherent in the Canadian healthcare (and immigration) systems and then draw your own conclusions.

BTW, I notice that you are aiming at going to Australia instead of Canada. Easy to defend Canadian policy from a distance, isn't it?

(BTW, for your elucidation, the U.S. government via medicaid and medicare directly and indirectly pays for the salaries and thereby training of the IMGs.)
