Does anyone have an idea of what is the net income of a doctor after expenses, what is the cost of malpractice insurance, or other costs of a MD

It depends on your specialty for one, the number of years in practice, geographical area, and the size of you practice. Malpractice also depends on the specialty you're in.

Just to give you some ideas, but please keep in mind it all varies. Some phsyicians take home more and some even less from their practice. Take a look...

Primary Care Physicians

OB/GYN ....... 2003 total revenue=$500,000 ....... 2003 total compensation = $220,000 (after paying malpractice, overhead fees etc.)

FPs ....... 2003 total revenue=$350,000 ....... 2003 total comp.=$150,000

Internists ...... 2003 total rev.=$318,000 .......2003 total comp.=$150,000

Peds ......2003 total rev.=$350,000 .......2003 total comp.=$130,000

GPs .......2003 total rev.=$249,000 .......2003 total comp.=$140,000

Other specialties

Cardiologists (invasive)....... 2003 total rev.= $780,000.......total comp.= $360,000

Gastroenterologists....... total rev.= $550,000 .......total comp.= $300,000

Orthopedic surgeons .......total rev.= $700,000 .......total comp.=$300,000

Cardiologists (noninvasive) .......total rev.=$500,000 .......total comp.=
$250,000

General surgeons....... total rev.=$407,000 .......total comp.=$230,000

All respondents....... total rev.$390,000 .......total comp.=$162,000

when you read these averages, you want a source that states"full time working MDs". these averages are low for IM. I knwo our program has 3 docs who are attendings only 1 day a week, as they are stay at home moms the other 6 days. they are the ones dragging average salarys down. the guys in my program who arejust now finishing are all startiung at around 180k with insurance paid.
