Here, we'll prove it! Oh..wait...eerrm...I think we deleted our data...

What a joke. First the emails are taken out of context....yeah right. And now all the supporting data is simply gone?????

What kind of scientific institution is this???

The data were gathered from weather stations around the world and then adjusted to take account of variables in the way they were collected. The revised figures were kept, but the originals — stored on paper and magnetic tape — were dumped to save space when the CRU moved to a new building...

...In a statement on its website, the CRU said: “We do not hold the original raw data but only the value-added (quality controlled and homogenised) data.”

This does raise a legitimate question as to the value of the way this data was interpreted. I always thought that real scientists never were supposed to delete their raw data.

This would indeed raise a very serious ethical dilemma - one which "normal citizens" should probably not worry themselves with until after the Copenhagen Climate Change Treaty is signed by all the major governments of the world.

Exactly, why should we mere citizens raise concerns. The scientists obviously have this under control.
And anyway, all we will have to do is cut our carbon emissions by 80%, thats not too much to ask is it?

BBC weatherman ¿ignored¿ leaked climate row emails | Mail Online

One of its reporters has revealed he was sent some of the leaked emails from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia more than a month ago – but did nothing about them.

Despite the explosive nature of some of the messages – which revealed apparent attempts by the CRU’s head, Professor Phil Jones, to destroy global temperature data rather than give it to scientists with opposing views – Paul Hudson failed to report the story

The entire climate debate aside I think this can have further ramifications. On a news show (forget which one) someone made the point that the one thing that was free from political spin and was completely honest was science. The problem this raises, IMO, is the questioning of scientific data itself. How can the general public trust, as they could in the past, data as being conclusive. I do not think that the fallout will be that big but do feel that the scientific community (all studies included) now has a ding in its armor.

Honestly did you guys ever do a research course in your undergrad? Publishing anything goes through an extensive review process by many accrediting agencies. It's not just published because it's cool or funded in a specific way. If there was something fishy it would take more than a few emails to prove that, many many people would be onto it.

The public might or might not always trust science, and of course all scientific data has bias to it but it has the most comprehensive and credible methodology towards studying any phenomenon. Scientists pride themselves on being brutally honest people, it is a hallmark of our profession. Yes physicians are part of science as well. Vague interpretations by 'skeptics' on the exchange of emails proves nothing, except that people will buy into any hype especially those who are not even scientists.

These hackers were probably hired by a special interest group (big oil or some right wing group) to prove that global warming is a hoax. Maybe it's an attempt to undermine science by religious groups. Who knows. But take a small drive up to Canada and you'll see how much of a hoax it is. Or fly to India. Hell there were floods in Saudi arabia, a desert, recently. Finally as physicians you all should be posting scientific studies, not media rhetoric (and BLOGS ROFL) that simply stirs up ridiculous conspiracy theories. This is taught to us on day one in our BSc, I guess most of you missed that class.

    That is a possibility.
