Thread: Calling all VMDers

Browsing through the topics over the past few days has been interesting to say the least. Although many of us differ with each other completely on several topics, there is one thing that binds us and that's our dependance on residency slots. Aside from our own futures being secured, the doctor shortage is huge and I mean huge (to give you an idea almost 20% of MDs today are over 60 today).


I've done more reading on this topic than most and can tell you that there are several initiatives underway to try and increase GME funding and slots. A lot of those initiatives need backing from YOU Americans to lobby your congressman/woman to come to action. The initiatives will bring medicine back under the control of doctors and away from NPs/PAs, create more innovative funding methods for GME and increase the no. of doctors employed.

Unfortunately the passing of these initiatives are completely in the hands of politicians, the AMA/AAMC are completely impotent and we are basically ruled by glorified lawyers and economists who don't really have a strong idea on what the doctor shortage is. And since politicians want to keep their voters happy, the more voters that speak out about this the better. So please spread the word.

Anyways just thought I'd try to bring a little unity to this part of VMD which creates so much disunion. Not only are the slot increases needed for us, they are needed for the future health of our families and the nation and to protect the integrity of our profession.

Well basically your own areas rep would be a good start. If you can somehow contact the Republican/Democrat party leaders it would be helpful as well.

It would be good to also send emails to the DO president asking for a joint match. A lot of this in the hand of you Americans, which I am not.

There's various websites that give you all the contact info for your representative. I posted a thread about this a few months back.

I can't emphasize enough how critical it is to actually CONTACT them, and let the know how you support this bill.

THIS BILL COULD MAKE OR BREAK YOUR CAREER. THIS BILL WILL INCREASE RESIDENCY SLOTS. What's the one issue about going to an offshore school? RESIDENCY SLOTS! Cmon people!
