Are US medical school graduates better than FMG's?

    Advertisements

I was watching the news over lunch and saw a piece on the doctors who prescribed meds to anna nicole smith. I wonder are they the products of US medical schools or foreign medical schools?

Is there any difference in the numbers of US educated graduates vs. international medical school graduates as far as malpractice suites or action taken against them (such as taking their license away).

Does anyone know of any study or comparison? Or is the *cali list* in fact based on the false belief that US trained doctors are in fact better? I really wonder are their any facts to back up the stigma associated with being educated outside of the US?

    Touchy subject.

IMHO the answer is no. But then I might be biased. My father is an FMG anesthesiologist and my brother is an FMG pulmonologist. And of course I am an FMG.

Many of our family friends are FMGs as well.

There are many noted FMGs. I would mention Peter Safar MD as an example. We all have him to thank for CPR and ACLS.

Actually in terms of overall performance, I heard that US doctors have a higher rate of medical mistakes than counterparts in countries like the UK, Canada, and Australia. So its not necessarily true that foreign educated doctors perform worse than their American counterparts.

This is what I am wondering about. Is there any statistical data that compares the two (I am particularly looking into carib. education vs. us)?

I think most of the IMG stigma is nonsense and really wonder if it can be justified based on any study that clearly points out that IMG (again particularly carib) perform differently than those educated in the US.

My friends father is a malpractice lawyer and has his own firm, he said that he sees a lot of FMG's. I would imagine that it would depend more on how you did in school. People who did badly are more likely to have ended up at a foreign school, but I don't think some one who does well from an American school is more competent than the some one from a Foreign school.

He also wanted to be a doctor but "didn't have the grades", so I'm sure hes a little bitter about not realizing another option existed.

What percentage of FMGs aren't from the carib?

i personally know a ton of Carib FMGs that are great. they are surgeons, gastroenterologists, pathologists etc.

i personally believe that it's more about the person themselves versus the school they went to. you can bring a horse to water but you can't make him drink, i believe is an applicable saying.

if you aren't one of the people that maximizes their opportunities to learn, does it really matter where you went?
but remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.
