I know after working a couple of back to back 10-hour shifts, I have a hard time functioning. I can only image what 30 hours does to your comprehension and critical thinking. I think a revamping of the current systme would be a good idea.

having worked at least one 36hr shift a week on my OB core, i can tell you that you aren't even a person after 24hrs, just a zombie. i'm glad i didn't drop any babies.
but remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.

for those of you in clerkships, or rotations, for how many hours do you usually work/study/scut/retract-man's best friend/etc????

Im still in basic sciences, but would like to gauge how much time do you really "work" while still a med student in 3rd and 4th years.

Interns wiling to share are more than welcomed too.

I really cannot comment properly on the work hours issue cuz i understand the different pros and cons of the new 80hour rule and the previuos 100plus.

the 80/100 hr rule doesn't apply to medical students, only residents (as i was told repeatedly by my surg/OB attendings). each clerkship/elective is different, and each attending is different. you can work anywhere from 20hrs/week to 40hrs/week to 100hrs/week.

Is that what they did back in their day and consider that the new ones must pay their dues the same way?

i doubt it. seemed like the ones that i saw simply wanted to take out their frustrations.
