Facts about Russia (continued) "moved" from EE forum
Quote:
I have "moved" the discussion here (from http://www.valuemd.com/viewtopic.php?p=81859#81859 ), because I think that there are several points that we might discuss while leaving others in peace. Regarding transparency. It does not include military secrets. What it does include is the removal of structures that are designed to protect owners of companies and trusts from being names. Russian corporate structures are among the most opaque on the planet. Does this mean that they cannot change? No. Again, it is not me that benefits. It is the average Russian and anyone that invests in Russia (unless you think that foreign investment in Russia is a bad thing). You attack my position needlessly. Media. Get real. There is no large scale independent media, thanks to the Kremlin shutting down anyone that criticizes them. Elections. In the absence of free media, you cannot have free elections. Re: Hungary's contribution to the war on terror. Hungary, despite its tiny relative size HAS troops on the ground in Iraq (under Polish command) supporting logistics. This is unlike the unhelpful statements coming out of the Russian foreign ministry. Having helped Saddam in the first place, they are more than unhelpful when it comes to dealing with Iraq today. Where are the Russian troops? More on the war on terror: Hungary has one of the only FBI offices abroad that have extraterritorial rights in Hungary; so that FBI agents here can and do arrest criminals with full Hungarian cooperation. I'll give you one guess who their favorite target is: Russian mafia who have decamped here! Re: Russian minority in Latvia/Estonia. 1) The Baltics were colonized by the Soviet Union. 2) My prescription is to come to an agreement with the governments regarding minority rights, not to surrender them. 3) Russia is far more discriminative against its own minorities living in the Baltics as it charges them a visa fee for returning to their "home" country. 4) The Russian living in Latvia can become Latvian citizens after passing a language test. The reason they choose not to do so, is because they believe Latvia to be part of Russia. Re: Caucausus. My prescription is that Russia come to a peace with the other nations in the Caucausus. What do you wish to do about Chechnya? I'm not anti-Russia, I'm anti-Russian nationalism. Miklos |

Bee,
Hungary is a long way from Georgia. I think that the larger question regarding the Caucausus is that if Afghanistan has taught the world a lesson, it is that "failed states" can and do provide harbor for terrorists. In the past, the world more or less ignored these failed states. We have seen what price the world collectively has paid for this error. Anarchy has become terrorism's best friend. IMO, the world collectively needs to address the lawless regions that harbor the enemies of civilization. Miklos |
