Facts about Russia (continued) "moved" from EE forum

Good idea, but I have reasons to believe that if someone doesn't trust several people on this forum who, to a different degree, have first-hand experience with Russia, he is unlikely to trust any media, unless such media fully reflects his own views and perceptions, or misperceptions, about Russia.

It exists, but it's not supported by the vast majority of the population.

Regardless my, or your opinion of Mr. Putin, we should respect the will of the majority of voters. Despite the election irregularities, he is the person supported by most people, as indicated by opinion polls and by my friends who are not his supporters but who can see the real picture, as they live there. Unlike you or myself, who do not!

Externally

The Baltics. Stop acting like bully in the Baltics. Protesting the fact that Belgian NATO jet fighters now cover the airspace is counterproductive and confirms the Balts' worst fears. Come to an agreement with Estonia regarding the disputed border. Stop trying to interfere in the local poltics of the Baltics. Come to an agreeement with Estonia and Latvia regarding the status of the Russian minority .

Two problems here. First, as an American taxpayer, I have serious concerns about your country's role in the war on terror. US pays billions of dollars! What is your country's contribution, as Hungary is a NATO member and wants to be protected? How many Hungarian soldiers
died in the course of this war? USA lost hundreds of soldiers' lives! I just mean to say that I suspect some new members of alliance in insincerity
and prioritizing their own interests.

Second, the discrimination of Russian minority in Baltic states is an internationally recognized issue. I know at least a dozen of ethnic Russians from Latvia and Estonia who got political asylum in the United States, due to the issue of discrimination. As I said, you just don't want to hear anything that is not in line with Russia-phobic conceptions. I wonder, why the international community boycotted South Africa for many years, only to allow apartheid to emerge in Europe.

The Caucausus. Realize that the dream of Greater Russia is dead and find a peaceful way out of the mess that the Soviet Union created. If need be, let the smaller states go and bring the troops home.

I see. Apparently you want Russia to disintegrate, but for some reasons don't pronounce that. Being from a country adjacent to Russia is not a reason to play dumb!

Central Asia. Same as elsewhere. Stop propping up dictators (same advice goes for the US!) .

Thank you! I will relate your message to both presidents as soon as I can.

But the key problem with Russia-phobia is, that it will exist as long as Russia exists. Try to overcome your attitudes, and your life will become much better!
NN ( as well as Bee and Tintin):

I have "moved" the discussion here (from http://www.valuemd.com/viewtopic.php?p=81859#81859 ), because I think that there are several points that we might discuss while leaving others in peace.

Regarding transparency. It does not include military secrets. What it does include is the removal of structures that are designed to protect owners of companies and trusts from being names. Russian corporate structures are among the most opaque on the planet. Does this mean that they cannot change? No. Again, it is not me that benefits. It is the average Russian and anyone that invests in Russia (unless you think that foreign investment in Russia is a bad thing). You attack my position needlessly.

Media. Get real. There is no large scale independent media, thanks to the Kremlin shutting down anyone that criticizes them.

Elections. In the absence of free media, you cannot have free elections.

Re: Hungary's contribution to the war on terror. Hungary, despite its tiny relative size HAS troops on the ground in Iraq (under Polish command) supporting logistics. This is unlike the unhelpful statements coming out of the Russian foreign ministry. Having helped Saddam in the first place, they are more than unhelpful when it comes to dealing with Iraq today. Where are the Russian troops?

More on the war on terror: Hungary has one of the only FBI offices abroad that have extraterritorial rights in Hungary; so that FBI agents here can and do arrest criminals with full Hungarian cooperation. I'll give you one guess who their favorite target is: Russian mafia who have decamped here!

Re: Russian minority in Latvia/Estonia. 1) The Baltics were colonized by the Soviet Union. 2) My prescription is to come to an agreement with the governments regarding minority rights, not to surrender them. 3) Russia is far more discriminative against its own minorities living in the Baltics as it charges them a visa fee for returning to their "home" country. 4) The Russian living in Latvia can become Latvian citizens after passing a language test. The reason they choose not to do so, is because they believe Latvia to be part of Russia.

Re: Caucausus. My prescription is that Russia come to a peace with the other nations in the Caucausus. What do you wish to do about Chechnya?

I'm not anti-Russia, I'm anti-Russian nationalism.

Bee,

Hungary is a long way from Georgia.

I think that the larger question regarding the Caucausus is that if Afghanistan has taught the world a lesson, it is that "failed states" can and do provide harbor for terrorists. In the past, the world more or less ignored these failed states. We have seen what price the world collectively has paid for this error.

Anarchy has become terrorism's best friend. IMO, the world collectively needs to address the lawless regions that harbor the enemies of civilization.
