natural medicine has no place in the United States where we base treatments on detailed studies. doctors that advocate this stuff should have their licenses revoked for irresponsibility. if a patient wants to google things and make life or death decisions based on the internet let them, but to actually prescribe something on what is essentially a whim is terribly irresponsible

how about when patient populations as a whole start showing up for health maintenance appointments and maybe just maybe actually start doing what they are told suring such appointments. you guys in "natural" medicine are full of crap..there i said it..what the hell are you curing? you get these neurotic healthy patients that pay for your services themselves so they actually take your advice since they have basically taken responsability for theior care by paying for it. (and i don't mean full of crap like herbals etc are fake but more in that you generally take care of very healthy pts and put all sorts of crap in your literature about how vitamins prevent all sorts of disease in your neurotically healthy population)

i would love to see you guys offer your services at the rates insurance companies reimburse so that your patients have no sense of money value of your time and see how closely they follow your dietary advice. in my clinic there is a full time nutritionist, do you know how hard it is to get pts to stay and see her? and even when they do i still see my diabetic 400 pounder scarfing down a burger with a pepsi in hall on her way to her 3rd nutritionist visit!!!!i have been doing this literally for a week and a year and i am so frustrated with patients not listening that i never want to do primary care when i get out of residency..i would loose all functional ability to relate to people and just start hitting themn with a stupid stick...

how about when you develop a vitamin that actually gets absorbed in the gut..or how about when you prove that God or nature or whoever you think created or developed humanity over the last few million years has a flawed design and needs vitamin supplementation to live. so unless you find an archeological dig somewhere with nature's pride bottles then the vast majority of us don't need vitamins to live a good life..a decent diet is all it takes. as one of our profs said "you americans have the worlds most expensive pee"

because in medicine things have to be proven and proven and proven until they take hold. for example a obgyn developed laparoscopic techiques for removing gallbladders and the appendix, when he started presenting he was critizised and was actually taken off the stage at a college of surgeons meeting....if i beleived everything anyone says without concrete long standing proof and took things from one source on first pass then i'd probably have DC after my name....hehe

OMG what the hell are you talking about, every natural healing magazine is adds cover to cover even the so called "stories" and "research" has ordering information and pricing at the end of the "article" most of the time. don't think for a minute that your "natural" medicines don't kill people....many have very potent biochemical properties and even in my very few years doing this i can not tell you how many times patients have come in sick and never mention that they are talking herbals or natural medicines because they don't see them as phramceuticals...they are meds by the way otherwise you may as well drink air water. we know medications harm patients because we know the chemicals are bio active and we keep track...i didn't mention homeopathics in this because that is worthless on any level i could care less if my patients bathed in it and drank that stuff from every orifice.

attempt to understand what? that "dilutions" of some nebulous medicine work? in my analitical chemistry class my midterm was figuring out that after their dilutions how much would a person have to drink of the "medicine" to ingest one cell (the medicine was made from duck liver) asnwer was in the order of thousands of gallons i don't remember the amount but it was 25,000 or some ridiculous number like that

actually you can't "cure" any of the above with what you prescribed but you can probably prevent most of it. natural medicine should be there to prevent me getting patients but once someone is sick then nothing you can offer works...hell some of what i can offer will only buy a few months.

learn to work together i have no problem sending my patients to a herbalist or chiro that i know practices in scope of practice and real evidence based practices...i do refuse to refer people to homeopaths and i am back and forth on naturapaths since their education and state credentialing is so varied

The AMA has some things to apologize for. Not backing up unproven and untested treatments is not one of them. If there were some really good studies that proved they worked, fine. The AMA isn't in the business of doing studies. The pharmaceutical companies will do anything they can for a buck. If there is something of substance to any of the claims the "natural" camp makes, you can be sure that they will find a way to extract, purify and/or synthesize whatever it is. NOTHING can evade them. G
