theres a few promising developments. one is this surgical, there is a study of patients that just had the lap band done and it cured type II DM in more than 80% of pts..of course it was related to weight loss.

the other developing field is cord blood stem cell transplants. these things are amazing, they go into circulation and are attracted to whatever area of the body is "damaged". there are case rteports of dieseases being cured or improved.

the one that comes to mind is a patient with florid type I DM, since it was autoimmune he'd also developed hypothyroid...he had cord blood transplant and the cells migrated to the pancreas differentiated and began producing insulin, not only that they also found their way to the thyroid, differentiated and began working! now this is a guy with florid diabetes on 100plus units am, pm, and po meds as well for not only the diabetes but also thyroid meds that is now on no thyroid meds and the only thing needed to control his dm is glyburide 2.5mg.

there is another case of a patient with heart dz who had the transplant for another indication and they found cord cells had migrated to the heart and had aranged themselves and were pumping away..there was a architecture issue but they were there pumping.

it is a transplant and you have to match it up but the possibilities astound me and i am collecting cord blood on everyone that allows me for a bank and reaserach project.
