AMNews: March 24/31, 2008. Students lose empathy for patients during medical school ... American Medical News
1- It only takes a year to start draining empathy from future physicians. 2-Scores decreased again after the third year in school, when students finished their first year of clinical rotations. 3-"We thought their having contact with patients and physician mentors would help, but it didn't" 4-Teaching physicians likely were rushed, (someone just discover the warm water)and students may not have received as much bedside teaching or mentoring as they expected. 5- Dr. Frankel said. "We start with students who are very caring but have no diagnostic skills and end up with physicians with great diagnostics skill but who don't care." in conclucion YouTube - Jerry Maguire - Show me the Money (clean edit)

Med school can do that to people, the intense stress and pressure plus being around death and the prospect of it makes people "cold". I have heard a few interns say in front of patients that they don't care. We are living in a world that is becoming more and more uncaring. Cold med students and doctors seem to be a worldwide phenomenon too.

Medical school is brutal. You are surrounded by death and suffering. A basic defense mechanism is for us to detach and de-humanize the patients. If we became emotionally involved it would be like having friends die all the time. That would wear on anyone. Of course, some people take it to the extreme.
I can remember when I was a new med student going to a code and hearing a senior resident say something like "I hope they are flatlined so this won't take long" I was disgusted. I can remember as a senior resident thinking the same thing. Again, I was disgusted. It is sad, but true.
