Exclamation Students lose empathy for patients during medical school

AMNews: March 24/31, 2008. Students lose empathy for patients during medical school ... American Medical News

1- It only takes a year to start draining empathy from future physicians.

2-Scores decreased again after the third year in school, when students finished their first year of clinical rotations.

3-"We thought their having contact with patients and physician mentors would help, but it didn't"

4-Teaching physicians likely were rushed, (someone just discover the warm water)and students may not have received as much bedside teaching or mentoring as they expected.

5- Dr. Frankel said. "We start with students who are very caring but have no diagnostic skills and end up with physicians with great diagnostics skill but who don't care."

in conclucion

The need to help other people is what have made very few people go into the medicine path, sometimes they even already know how demanding medicine is.
With time and the system per se many young doctors that got into medicine to try to help other people and try to make a difference realize is to hard to change the system and they become cold and distant putting aside the human touch of medicine.
At the end you will end up like a group of ____________ that only think about the money they think they are better than you and what we called emotions or human touch goes to the drain in what is called the professionalism.

Now I understand why Many Doctors, see many things so trivial and not a big deal, 1- they did not had to go thorough what most people have to go and they already have been mold to the GOD feel pedestal.

The good thing is that I will speculate that less than 3% of the MD that practice medicine and that started with so call "good intentions" or make the difference in patients life, will still have those visions, so if you find one try to keep that doctor because they are going to be extinct very soon.
GOD wiil be there during the journey and if you just remember a little about him you will not turn into an old pitbull

After reading this it seems some one did not took his special vitamin today.

I guess the Humanities classes are not helping. I was fortunate to go to an undergrad institution that did not have a cutthroat attitude. I hope med school is the same way.

Med school can do that to people, the intense stress and pressure plus being around death and the prospect of it makes people "cold". I have heard a few interns say in front of patients that they don't care. We are living in a world that is becoming more and more uncaring. Cold med students and doctors seem to be a worldwide phenomenon too.

Medical school is brutal. You are surrounded by death and suffering. A basic defense mechanism is for us to detach and de-humanize the patients. If we became emotionally involved it would be like having friends die all the time. That would wear on anyone. Of course, some people take it to the extreme.

I can remember when I was a new med student going to a code and hearing a senior resident say something like "I hope they are flatlined so this won't take long" I was disgusted. I can remember as a senior resident thinking the same thing. Again, I was disgusted. It is sad, but true.
