don't teach. do things that will address your deficiencies. if you had low exam scores, rock step3. if you had bad clinical evals, do externships at programs in which you want to apply.
as far as research, you don't need to work in a lab to be published. approach attendings/docs you know about writing case studies/articles and attempt to get published.
