white coat ceremony is a ceremony done at nearly every medical school all over the world. its a rite of passage/ceremonial gathering in which the medical students receive their white coats to signify that they are now going to be doctors. typically the students take the Oath, the Dean speaks, parents show up and our proud and good times are had by all.

the ceremony is either done before medical school begins, or before the student enters clinicals.

I don't think it has such a global prevalence.
Most of us in the world outside the U.S. have gotten along just fine without this particular quite recent rite of passage.
In fact Wikipedia and other internet sources suggest that even in America, the fount of the practice, it only dates back to the 1990's.
In Europe the medic's formal, ceremonial rites typically occur at matriculation into medical school and at graduation.
There are of course plenty of informal milestones, e.g. one's first encounter with a cadaver (and a far more fearsome anatomy teacher); forays into clinical practice during rotations; being "pimped". Although not stage-managed for doting parents etc. these are arguably more important than the white coat ceremony.
Having said which, it seems that white coating is spreading quite rapidly and one day it may be true to say it's done at nearly every medical school worldwide.

Maybe not in England anymore, aren't they forbidden to wear whitecoats now due to health regulation, ties, and long sleeved shirts?

Good point.
Short-sleeved coats lack...er...sex-appeal, style, gravitas?
Perhaps we need an alternative ceremony for the era of endemic MRSA and C. difficile.
The washing of hands has always been highly symbolic, so maybe a communal chlorhexidine scrub (performed by the Dean?) would be especially apt. As well as signifying clinical asepsis and the transcendent purity of the physician it could also be taken to symbolize a renunciation of all responsibility for future mishaps - like a legal disclaimer.

i've actually seen it at several medical schools throughout the world. it does have a major global prevalence.
the WCC might have been started in the US about 15 years ago, but its been practiced in other countries for much longer (india for example).
i really don't think wikipedia is the most accurate of sources.

as for non-medical schools having the ceremony, i do not agree. i don't even know why pharmacists wear white coats.

You might well “have actually seen it at several medical schools throughout the world”: that does not amount to your original comment that –
“white coat ceremony is a ceremony done at nearly every medical school all over the world.
and your incredulity at IMG SURVIVOR’s ignorance of the rite.
I might however agree with your latest statement that it has a “major global prevalence” – that's very different. And, to continue with the epidemiological terminology, its rapid rate of transmission may, as I mused, make this true very soon if it isn't already.

We also agree about the tainted wisdom of the Wiki – which is why, as you’ll also have noticed, I didn’t elevate or rely solely on it.

What's your objection to pharmacists wearing white coats and having their own ceremony?
