AVG is still free, although you can upgrade for a fee if you want. I use the free version and it does just fine. You can search for it here.

I would recommend getting two or three of the free ones to gain the most broad spectrum coverage.

you're welcome.

the default setting on AVG checks every single file on your hard drive which can take a loooong time. Obviously the more stuff you've stored then the longer it'll take.

You can adjust the scanning to only check the "high risk" areas that are targeted more frequently by viruses
