Rokshana, just because you took maternity leave, it does not make you look 'special'.Its your right! But there are more laws needed to empower women. They dont become sissys for availing such facilitites. Who gets pregnant? Women not men! But its the lady who has to 'adjust'.Why? Why fighting for equality is a 'disservice' to other woman, partcularly when the laws deemed 'equal' are heavily loaded against women? I think the Harvard lady took on the 'establishment' for her own 'narrow' reasons, but has ushered in a topic, which every one wants sweep under the carpet- women unfriendly laws! Because men and women are DIFFERENT, hence laws should be cognizant of the same. Most fortune 500 companies offer daycare at work, and does it make a women employees availing them, 'weaker'? NO, ITS THEIR right!! The moot point is, WOMEN ARE NOT ASKING FOR A BREAK , THEY ARE SIMPLY ASKING FOR EQUAL GENDER SPECIFIC LAWS. Equal treatment only comes when differences are addressed. and its family leave, men can take it as well as women, so no special preference (though BTW i didn't take maternity leave- i raised mine while i was in grad school and was a prof, but you know i never would have excused myself from class to tend to my kids...i would make sure some one was watching them or i scheduled my classes accordingly... its a privledge and an honor to raise children as it is a privledge and honor to practice medicine..you have to know that you are able to give both their due...sometimes you have to sacrifice to do one or the other...some people will choose to go to med school after their kids are born and off in school, others will have only one child or 2, knowing that to try to juggle a big family is difficult with a demanding practice... i have friends who are timing their pregnancies with 4th year- if not pregnant by a certain date, they wait... or they are taking a year off and will enter the match the following year to care for their newborns...they are not asking for special consideration, they are doing what they think is right for them and their family. again, the greater good is not served by someone purposely creating a divide, a divide that the women before us have tried so hard to close...

and to say equal gender specific laws is just oxymoronic- like "separate but equal"- brown vs the board of education ruled that this is not possible - laws that are gender biased cn never be equal.

There is no division, its just more specific rules.Men and women have to accept 'differences'. Oxymoronic? Wont use such words, but thats me. I and you, dont have to argue this to death, so I will cease posting on this issue. I think adapting is fine and so is closing the ' gap', but it should not be based on 'what men might think of me', but on 'what is fair for me'. Women rights should not be mistaken for 'affirmative action'. I think women should not be 'bullied into thinking' that their birth rights are 'special treatments'.Thats the fundamental difference between my views and your thinking. I also think you views are beautiful, but I dont agree with them. Take care and all glories to you. You rock! Last edited by immunologic; 11-03-2007 at 01:05 PM. |
