What offshore schools are more disadvantaged? Any specifics? Or do Caribbean graduates in general have it tougher than other IMGs?

In terms of what states you can get licensed, PD's personal experiences, etc.. Caribbeans in general have it much worse than say an IMG coming from an English school (that is not St. Chris).

I was actually just googling residency programs, and saw Caribbean and several Irish graduates in the same residency program. Why would graduates of UK and Irish schools be seen as better if they are in the same program?

Perhaps same reason why there are US students in the same residency with Caribbean students?

They arent supposed to pay for your med school. And dont be afraid to go into debt. There is a huge diff btwn going into debt bc you wanted a new car/shoes/bag/ entertainment system and investing in your future. yes that is exactly what you are doing. There was a thread about this on the SMU forum. the jist of it was that you invest 200K but end up making over 7mil over a period of 30 yrs. its chum change.
I dont think that you are grasping the actual income vs what you are paying out. even if you are taking home 10k a month
( worst case), your loan payment is max 1000 a month. you dont think thats enough?????
Sweetie, you need to finish high school with good grades...figure out how you will pay for college first. Then you figure out who YOU are as a person IN COLLEGE. You take a variety of classes... After that you decide whether you want to become a physician. And once you apply and get in, where ever, you think about how you will finance this.

You are taking leaps and you havent even began to crawl yet. And please dont take offense. I am just speaking from experience, I was in such a hurry to get to college that I was in my first college class at 16. That didnt get me any further than my friends.
I am also saying this as an older sister....of college sophmore who switches her majors like her underwear.
This week shes are on marketing......Last week it was finance.

What you are referring to is called competition between partners..that never ends well. And it doesnt matter whether you are both doctors, lawyers, have different jobs.
Relationship dynamics are a complex thing, people go their whole lives not grasping that.
I am married to a doctor...we never run out of things to talk about, and we have even more things to laugh about. We have the same interests and it goes much deeper than a persons career choice. Thats just the icing on the cake.
And when you are married to someone who is in medicine, just like you. They have a different understanding towards your schedule. They are more tolerant, and wont get mad if you dont call for 4 days straight.

I also have many friends who are either residents and dating someone not in medicine. Or they are not in medicine and dating a resident/ physician. It doesnt seem to work, bc the other person cant possibly understand how you can be to tired to call them...after all it only takes two minutes, and 1 minute to send a text. Given, it also depends on the person.

Believe me, when you get older, you will understand what I am referring to.
'

Good luck!

I'm going to graduate from high school March or April 2008 with a 3.95GPA, I'm taking the SAT one last time in October. I am unfortunately the oldest in my family, my parents didn't go to college in the US, so I am one big bundle of panic. I don't change my mind easily. I've got my majors narrowed down to four: music, biotechnology, health admin..., and humanities. I'm leaning towards music or humanities.
I don't have to decide whether I want to become a physician because I have wanted to forever. I was considering something in cardiology, neurology, OBGyn with maybe speciality in cancers of the reproductive system, or internal medecine. Even if it isn't in one of these as long as I finish med school, I will reach nirvana.

Plus I can only ride one boat at a time, so relationship, etc... are going to sit on the back burner for a long long time.

thats not a good thing, bc the whole point of these high school and college boyfriend is practice. and practice makes perfect and no im not talking about sex. I am talking about being in a relationship. it takes alot of work and dedication, compromise and patience to be in a good relationship. and majority of people dont get it right the first few times. you dont want to be practicing at 25. trust me on this one.
You not only need to find out who you are by your self, but who you are within a relationship. So when the real thing comes, you it will be a balanced and healthy relationship. And of course you will learn to recognize a real thing...which only comes from experience.

in addition, if you cant juggle school and bf how will you juggle husband, kids, dog, in-laws and career????
it wont come to you when you are older...you will need to use diplomatic relationship skills that you will get from previous relationships (see above)

your parents might be all for it...."yea dont worry about boys, blah blah blah..."
you do need to date, you do need to have a relationship, you do need to have the experience.

Start now, see where it leads you. and you wont get sidetracked if you use condoms and be levelheaded.

Here is the law that I live by " men are a luxury, not a necessity"
i dont NEED to be married, but I am enjoying every day of it. ( and no, we are not newlyweds)

many ppl opt for no relationships in med school...But others, like me feel that its just what they need in med school...my husband gives me so much support, and we are team.
