in ireland education is free. but money has to come from somewhere. so taxes are very high. Its easy to point out the problem but solutions rarely mean not taking from elsewhere. See sicko as a good example. the first half is great at pointing out the problem. the 2nd shows your the great parts of other systems. it neglects to mention where the moeny comes from to pay for all that.

Not to mention how to even BEGIN to change it. Can you imagine if we did change the system overnight? How many doctors would be bankrupted? Kicked out of their homes, lose their practices, everything? Especially the new doctors and residents?

you dont yet know what that sort of debt means. When youre 17, $1000 of credit card debt (and of course id ont knwow what you owed) seems insurmountable. 100K of debt when youre earning an attendings salary- and that's when you start paying back your loans, still lets you live a very rich lifestyle. your monthly pay off is a small fraction. If you can be debt free, great. but I think the numbers sound huge to you because relative to the money a teenager manages, it is. to a doc earning over a hundred thousand a year, its another thing..

$1,000 as a teenager? I wish I had that type of money when I was in college! :-(

But yeah, the relativeness of it all is mind boggling. Due to the massive size of my debt, dropping an extra hundred bucks on something doesn't seem to bother me in the least bit.

no pain, no gain. Besides, I didn't mean overnight, but is anyone even trying?

yes they are. government, industry, PACs. Its a mistake to think people haven't thought of these things and even made careers working on them.
