But can't you make the same argument for urologists, that they will also keep themselves in demand by keeping the number of residency programs low and ultra-competitive?

Yes. I think you can say that.

the problem with gerontology is that you won't make any more than a primary care doc. Most internists do a lot of gerontology already. While I agree that a fellowship is helpful, I don't see much demand for it. G

Neurology. We are the prozac nation, I can see making a bundle just sitting there all day writing prescriptions.

Infectious Diseases specialists don't earn that much more than standard Internists, the average is 175K a year. If I am not mistaken the fellowship takes another 3 years out of your life. No wonder Dr. House is so obnoxious. Pathology and Radiology, the latter is highly competitive but they are getting outsourced. There are primary care doctors doing a lot of things that were once considered **, like adding Oriental and Homeopathic treatments, I recall one primary care doctor who sells oriental therapies to his patients in NJ, this is bringing medicine down to the same level of hucksterism as dentistry.

Gastro is a gold mine, its not hard to make over 500K a year, looking up people's butts. If its Paris Hilton's or Carla Gugino's butt I would do it for free .

I'd hate to think what's growing out of it.

$5 million dollars for an education video on why someone shouldn't do drugs and make sure to use protection? That seems pretty steep.
