So much for Wikipedia

http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/n...91eb23&k=69668

For those Wikipedia users, take a look at this. I could imagine there was something wrong with them when last month the history department at Vermont's Middlebury College banned students from using the site in citations.

To think that there was a rumor that a Medical board in the US used them as reference once or twice as reference makes you think.

Yeah, most of my professors (undergrad & grad) have stressed not using Wikipedia as a reference or primary resource. I usually use it as a dictionary, quick look-up, or history reference and I love how fast and easy it is. I realize I defin use it too much, but it's really good and until something better comes along, I'm sticking to it.

i would think its common sence not to consider wikipedia a hard source. you might get interesting info, that may be true or not. what's scarey is when i see doctors use it for medical things.

Even at University here, we're not allowed to use WikiPedia for anything. As a non peer-reviewed source it's considered unreliable. Their opinion, not mine. Well, not when writing a crappy essay anyway

Some judges use wikipedia as source, but ONLY for references of things that have no part in their decision making. Such as what a particular type of drink is, etc.

Though at my university, we were not allowed to use ANY internet sources unless it came from like pubmed or something similar

Definately. It's really quick and easy. I'm not gonna read an actor's autobiography just to find out his real name or list of works. Just as I wouldn't scour through an almanac to find out the records of past cricket umpires.

edit--

I don't use wiki for medical stuff unless its a quick look up of what Yersinia is or something like that. I use it more to know a little bit about a lot of things like food & drinks (soe!), sports, movies, etc..
