5 years ago this morning, where were you?

I was awoken by a phone call from a frantic parent of a college roommate to turn on the TV (he was in the air force, and she was freaked out).

I asked what channel, and she yelled "ANY CHANNEL!!!".

I then watched live as one of the twin towers fell to the ground, and Peter Jennings (who died of lung cancer since then, don't smoke guys! ) sat quiet for a couple minutes and didn't know what to say.

At MUA in Nevis

I had just started medical school and been there a week. Did not find out about it until after 1:00 p.m. School let out to make phone calls. None of us new people had a TV or internet. Drove downtown and sat in a rosta bar watching the event unfold for a couple of hours.

What a shock.

I was painting my basement. I had the TV tuned to Fox News, since I am a news junkie anyway. They cut from Fox and Friends to the WTC. There was confusion about the size of the plane that hit, and at first they thought it was an accident. I saw that second plane hit live, and that pretty much told us it wasn't an accident. I didn't get very far on the basement that day. G

Heading to school in my last year in Resp. Therapy school. I remember the news not exactly knowing what was going on and our professor telling us around 10:00.

I had just moved to the USA 3 days before 9/11. I immigrated from a country in Africa that was in turmoil with civil war and escaped with just the clothes on my back. When i saw the news, i didn't react, i just felt numb. The violence i had witnessed and experienced back home probably desensitized me. But when reality hit...i realized that no place is ever really secure...

I woke up to pounding on the ceiling for me to wake up and yelling to turn the TV on, then the pounding in my head started from all the Vodka I had drank the night before. I was in a haze and very much ticked off for being woken up so early. When the TV started showing the images my headache was gone in a second.....................

I was in my car, heading to an early morning class. When the radio DJ announced that a plane had hit, I thought that it was just a private plane. It wasn't until I got to school and saw the tvs in the lounge area that something catestrophic was going on. I went to class and annouced it to everyone...no one believed me, not even my professor. He had done some governement work, and was paranoid that people were after him, and he thought that this was the case, as well. He ran from class and, 20 minutes later, came back to confirm. He canceled class and told us to all go home to be with family and friends.

Being on the east coast, I know of many families affected by this tragedy. My neighbor's son left his job the day before at one of the companies located on the upper floors of the 1st tower that was hit...no one he knew survived.

Solemn day of remembrance.
Thank you, OP, for starting this thread.
