i was on the road listening to a morning show while commuting to my undergrad school. they described it as a giant hole in one of the buildings. i called my mother to tell her to turn on the news to see if this was really happening. just as she did it, the second plane hit.

i got to my college and went to my physics class. i was there a few minutes early so we had the tv on in the room. they were interviewing somebody at the pentagon when the guy just informed us that he heard a loud boom. it started to sink in that the pentagon was just hit. just then, my physics professor came in and said that it was class time and he was still going to run the class and promply turned off the TV.

i sat through about 20 minutes of class and then asked myself what the hell i was doing there while all of this was going on. i couldnt even concentrate on the material that suddenly felt so pointless and trivial in the big picture. i left pretending that i was going to the bathroom. i got to another room with a TV only to be in complete disbelief and shock that there was only one tower standing.

I was on break at work and was taking little nap. Someone woke me up and told me that plane hit world trade center and he told me it was an accident. Then the second plane hit and our view changed. It was terrorist attact. This event has affected all of us one way or another.

what i remember

a bout 9:00 am - I was walking to school (Cooper Union in the Village in NYC) then I see an ambulance fly by, 20 seconds later, another and then a whole cascade of ambulances and firefighters. I was wondering what happened, but when I got to school I heard : "a plane hit the world trade center". My first thought was that it was some small cesna or something that accidentaly hit it but then They showed the towers on TV with smoke billowing out of one of them.

A few minutes later another plane hit - even though we were maybe 2 miles away from the WTC we couldnt see or hear it b/c NYC is so noisy and built up... but we saw it on TV.

The AV guy from my school was on the roof of the school I later found out, videotaping it all.

Of course classes were cancelled. I remmber waling back home across downtown manhattan and just streams of people walking uptown. Cell phones wouldnt work because they were overloaded by the call volume.

When I got home, my mom said - we're getting out of manhattan so we drove to my grandmother's in the bronx. The trip took about 2.5 hours - because so many people were leaving manhattan out of fear.

Going the other way on the FDR (highway) were a convoy of bulldozers...

Every radio station, tv station, anything for the next week played nothing but reports about this...

We spent about a week with my grandmother, streets were closed to pedestrians below 14th I think for several days. My school reopened in about 2 weeks I think. I never went down to the WTC site until over a year later, even though some students from my school would sneak in there on their mountain bikes and ride around... (not on the site itself, just around the financial district which was covered in ash and still smoldering)...

I went to high school only about 1/4 mile from the WTC (Stuyvesant) and it served as a triage station for victims....

My mom actually worked in the world financial center until 1999 which is a smaller building adjacent to the WTC which was destroyed as well ...

A frined of mine worked (and still works) in the financial center and when I talked to him on the phone he told me how he saw people jump or fall. And how he hid in a deli from the cloud of debris coming down... and then how he took the Battery city ferry out the city as everything else was not working...

...

i was in chicago at school, watched it on TV..noone went to class we sat outside in a daze watching the sears tower waiting for it to be hit so that maybe we could run down and do something if it came down.....from campus we have a clear view of the entire city we saw planes fly around for a bit then nothing, then all of a sudden F-15 and F-16's around the city...it was just like the air show but i could see sidewinder and air-ram missiles on the planes...and that you don't see at the air show..surreal

I'm in England so it was about lunchtime here when the news came through. We were in the middle of a football match when it broke and for the first time one of the teachers came down and stopped the (quite significant) match to bring everyone in to watch the news.

What made it more poignant was that I was there a few days before on holiday. And I was in London on 7/7 so I guess I have a habit of being in the wrong place

It was the second night in Turkmenistan where I and many others of the group were starting our Peace Corps assignment. We were enjoying the night by dancing and drinking vodka/beer with the local workers at our training site; I noticed that the medical officer and Assistant counry director were walking toward us, and remembering saying... "come and join the party!" Then I noticed the facial expressions as they got closer... very grim... and the other people in our group behind them following with their PJs on....; We sat there silent while they told us that US was attacked in NYC, Washington DC, and Pittsburg... we were stunned and numb; But we never thought that we would be evacuated back to the states....; Parents were calling the government offices, their representatives to get their kids back...... so much confusion... But finally they told us that we were closing the office, and being evacuated... and we were told by so many people not to say that we were Americans...; We arrived and were whisked off to be debriefed... and the airports were different from what we left... It was crazy... the environment was changed... I just didn't even know what to think or do....
