anxiety Q

A 25 year old PT climbs 15 flights of stairs every morning to reach his office because he is terrified at the thought of being trapped in the elevator. What is his diagnosis?

a. PTSD
b. social phobia
c. performance anxiety
d. specific phobia

f. generalized anxiety disorder

for this PT, what is the treatment of choice?

a. valproic acid
b. diazepam
c. phenelzine
d. quetiapine
e. psychoanalysis
f. exposure therapy
g. do nothing

sounds like a specific phobia, which is best treated with exposure therapy.

yes specific phobia = irrational fear of certain situation or object, which PT will avoid

Tx of choice is graduated exposure therapy or systamatic desensitization (modifies phobic behaviors by constructing a hierarchy of anxiety-producing stimuli and gradually presenting them to the individual until they no longer produce anxiety)
