    Question about Pre-Req Course levels

I am starting my science courses, and am unsure of how certain courses hold up to the requirements. My local state school, for example, offers Chem 111, intro to Organic Chemistry 4 Credits with lab, then Chem 231 Orgo Chem 1. I have already completed Chem 111 as my science requirement for my non traditional degree (Media and Communication Arts with concentration in Psych).
I have called medical schools and received the same answer "We require 1 year of college level Organic Chemistry with labs" To me it seems that if I took Organic Chem 1, in combination with Intro to Organic Chemistry, that I would satisfy those requirements-even by US standards. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Main reason being, I am a BIO ace, but chem gives me a harder time. If I can use these two courses, my GPA would be significantly more impressive.

Also, would it be beneficial to take Anatomy and Physiology as my bio rather than just general Bio?

Just to clarify, I am not looking for a hard answer-obviously only admissions would be able to offer that. I am only looking for a general impression of those that have gone through the process. Do they specify Gen Chem 1 and 2, or just say two semesters of Gen Chem?

Which school are you attending? Any class with the word "intro" in the title is usually either a remedial course (no such thing as a remedial organic chemistry though) or a course designed for non-majors, maybe without a lab component.

    Thank you for the response

It's the State University of New York. I thought the same thing about it being remedial, except all remedial courses begin with 0. Remedial Chemistry is 090. There is also a 100 level general chem with no lab. This is different, in the NY curriculum it is taken as part of the General Science Education Major, Biology Major, etc. They take Intro to Organic Chem (Chem 111-4 Credits with Lab) and Organic Chem I (200 level, 4 credits with Lab) but they are not required to take Organic Chem II unless they are a Chemistry major. Basically the highest level of chem required for non chem science majors is the 200 level Organic Chem I.

I know there may not be a straight answer to this, but I can potentially apply to med school an entire semester earlier if this class fulfills the requirement. If it doesn't, I will have to delay my application just to take one class. I will do whatever I need to, but I am hoping this could work out. Just wasn't sure if anyone had experience fulfilling the 1 year requirement without taking Organic Chem II.

I can only speak for AUA of course. But CHM 143 Pre-Organic Chemistry (1) at SUNY-Albany probably won't count for Organic Chemsitry with us. It doesn't appear to have a Lab component. And since it doesn't fit into the traditional "one academic year of Organic Chemistry" model, we would more than likely want to see an Organic Chemistry 2 to go with 1. If you're not a SUNY-Albany student...I couldn't find another, similar course in the SUNY system.

    Thank you

Thank you for your help. I really appreciate the detailed response. Here is the description from the catalog. I don't want to say the exact school in SUNY publicly, but I'd be happy to PM it. I appreciate AUA looking into this for me, I just looked at your website. It's great that AUA has a hospital affiliation.

    Intro to Organic Chemistry 112
A study of organic compounds with emphasis on structure, nomenclature, major reactions and applications. This is followed by an elementary introduction to biomolecules and their metabolism. The laboratory experiments illustrate reactions, synthesis, purification and characterization of organic or biomolecules. The student is encouraged to use the library as a resource. Note: Students must register for both a lecture and a lab. 3 Lecture, 2 Lab, 4 Credit Hours. Prerequisite: CHE 111.
    4.000 Credit hours
    3.000 Lecture hours
    2.000 Lab hours

    Levels: Credit
    Schedule Types: Lecture/Lab, Lab, Lecture

Math, Physical & Computer Sci Department

    Course Attributes:

Since it has both a lecture and lab component whoever evaluates your transcripts would have a hard time justifying not accepting this as an organic chemistry course. If you applied to a school and they don't like the course hopefully they could 1) conditionally accept you upon successful completion of OChem 2 or 2) reject you for missing the prerequisite. If rejected you could ask them to revisit their decision after you complete the course. I suggest running the scenario by someone in Admissions where you plan on applying to see if they have accepted anyone from your school with this course counting as a prerequisite in the past.

Curatio: I attended SUNY New Paltz for a year and took some other classes at Binghamton after I transferred. I'd be happy to help you navigate the pre-med requirements if you need any more help
