    age limit for medschool

    Advertisements

what is the age limit to do residency or internship? i am interested in surgery (cardiovascular surgery) but i am 25 and probably will apply for med school around 28 or so, so I am just wondering about age requirements.

I have seen residents in their forties. I know they want younger people, but 28 (will be 32 at the time applying where the US grad is 26) really is not THAT much older than the competition. I would try to get into a US school; since being a foreign grad is a much larger barrier to acceptance than being a few years older than the mean.

There is no age limitation. I have seen residents over 50 and many in their late 30's through 40's. As far as your situation sweetdream, you should have no problem period.

However, I can pretty much tell you that graduating from a foreign school, carib. in this case, would make it virtually impossible to get a cardiovascular surgery residency. Even if you review the lists provided by some med schools, you will not see this specialty. I have seen neurosurgery once, but not cardio.

If this is your passion, I would def. agree with drdrwmd in that you should try to gain admission to a US school to greatly increase or establish a chance to get this type of residency. Good luck!

AUA has a 15 year old girl and her 40-something year old mom starting their internships soon, and our hospitals don't seem to have a problem with either.

That's pretty cool Sree. But for the 15 y/o, aren't their age requirements in most states requiring her to be at least 21 to be granted a license? Also Sree, would she able to obtain residency being under 21, or would that not apply??

Need to be 21 for a license in NY State, but can start residency at 18. I don't know about other states. So she might have to take a short break, before residency.

Thank you very much for answering my question, it makes me happy to know that age isnt a problem, even though wouldnt it make it harder for me since they want younger people?. As for the cardiovascular surgery, I am a little bit sad. I was aiming for a Caribean medical school because of my low GPA, I would be happy with anything as long as is surgery, where could I find out more information about specialities on caribean schools? What about competition? I am a little scared that if I go to a caribean school I wont be able to get a recidency in the US, or I will have trouble getting a job after I graduate. Does one needs special requirements to be able to get a liscence when one graduates from a caribean school to be able to work in the US? I am sorry I just have so many questions and I dont know where else to get a fair truthful answer.

    1. there is no "specialty as far as medschool" you have to do very well on step one for surgery, I would think above 230

    2. No matter what school, residency is harder in the specialtys to get than from a US school but you can get them with a good step score.

    3. Program directors, most, do not know the caribbean schools, if they are a caribbean grad then they may only know of thier school, so the step score rules with the LOR from cliinicals.

    4. There is no Acceditation for caribbean schools and no real ranking, only the stuff posted by students.

Have Phd, masters in other area, would probably need two years of undergrad, in addition to med school.

Would applying to med school at my age be ridiculous?

    (healthy, etc.)

Any suggestions of further sources of information? I live in NYC.

    THANK YOU!
