Low Undergrad GPA and Postbaccalaureate Premedical
I am 27 years old, and have a BA from a solid US college. I am currently an Senior Information Systmes Auditor, with one of the Big 4 firms. My wife is a MD, and I have had a desire to become a MD since I was a little kid, but never had the drive.
I am at a point in my life where I have the drive to further my studies(Postbaccalaureate Premedical), which will take approx. 2 years. My undergrad GPA was a 2.4, which was low, but I have done a lot with my life since my 1999 graduation. Sometimes I feel like I will never reach my goal, seeing that US medical schools only want high GPA and MCAT scores. Another option I am looking at is going to Med school in Poland. My wife went to Medical University of Lodz, and is doing great here in the US. The plan as of now is for me to start my Premedical Program this June. Either way, I will need my Pre-med classes. Does anyone have any advice for me. Regards, Michael |

don't worry ~
My doctor told me if you have a low GPA, that would be okay, but you just need to be sure that you do well on the MCAT and any volunteer works. They might interview you, and just to see if you are already for the Medical school and the challenge that is in front of you. If you prove them that you can do what they need in Medical field, you will be fine. You just need to stay in your goal. I am worry about my low GPA too, but I did not give up my hope. You just have to stay in your goal. If you don't get in once, you will get in the second time. This is the test that they give you, and make sure that you know the importance of the life, and the ethical part of the medical field. Good luck for you and me.

Advice
If you really want to do it, go ahead. You are still relatively young and you have your wife's experience to help lead the way. I would recommend that you gear yourself to being accepted by a US school (don't forget the DO schools, they seem to like non-traditionals like us).
If you can't get into a US school or simply want to try a different path go ahead and go overseas. Don't forget about us down here in the Caribbean (it's a good spot). Also don't forget about Australia and Ireland. If you like Europe, consider Charles University in Prague. Whatever you do -- if you really want to be a Doctor, just do it. There are numerous pathways. You just have to find the one that's right for you. Best of luck! |
