    Pre-Med Reqs and State Licensure...

    Hi Everyone,

I have recently been accepted to medical school starting in May of this year. This acceptance was granted on the merit of my good MCAT score and my 2 B.S. degrees. One in Computer Science, the other in Biomedical Sciences. Although I have done Biochem in my Biomed degree, I have never done Organic Chemistry.

My questions is: Will my lack of O. Chem be a problem when comes the time of state licensure?

Although I have already been accepted, should I scramble and get my O. Chem pre-reqs done in the meantime as a pre-emptive measure? There is a college nearby that gives accelerated courses and I would be able to get O Chem I & II done before May. Of course if I don't have to, I'd rather focus on others things: Sell House, Plan Stuff, Quit Job, Sell Furniture, Sell Cars, Prepare Kids....:-)

Thanks so much for your help!

    WantMD :-)

    me

I know alot of states including mine have requirements that are 90 hours of prerequisites which include organic 1 and 2, physics 1 and 2, and 1 year of bio at least. I would take it just to be sure. What school did you get accepted to?

    just wondering?

hi,how are you? I was just wondering which school you were accepted to. I was under the impression that you NEEDED and it was REQUIRED that
    1-year of bio
    1-year of general chem
    1-year of physics
    and 1-year of ORGANIC CHEM

be complete. I was accpeted to med school as well, a couple of them but my application status is accepted pending the completion of Organic Chem ( my nursing school could not give me credit for it ) so i have to re-take Organic. Anyhow i am just curious as to what school accepted you without having completed the pre-req's first. Take care

    ...

Yes, you need to do O-chem, or else you will have licensure problems in many states. Many states require undergrad transcripts during licensure application.

    A question for you

Hi I have a similar problem.
I was thinking of doing my pre-med req.s here before transferring to one of the many foreign schools. But because i have to take general chemistry before taking O chem, I wont be able to meet the req.s and so i am now thinking bout just going into one of the 6 year programs.

What school did u get into ? I was initially planning to take the MCATS but alongwith that I need to finish all the science requirements including O-chem.

So, Being in the same situation as you , i am wondering whether I can also get in without the 1 year of O-Chem.

    Thanks

    Hi Want

Would it be possible to take organic while you are in med school through the pre-med program or correspondence? Although my science GPA is good I scored a C in organic. I am just going through the application procedure now. Do you think this is a potential problem?

    prerequisites

Is it ok to have biochemistry instead of org2 and only one semester of physics ? I have a foreign degree with my prerequisites done in the States and already being accepted at Saba and St.Matts.So should I do one more semester of physics and org2 just to avoid potential licensure problems?

Yes St. Chris and some of the Carrib schools would take you, Don't Know about the $$$ Irish 6yr if your GPA is too low they may not accept you.

You should finish premed then apply and go though.

No many offshore will take people with these undone, some right out of Highschool, I think the later is not for the best though.
