    Arrow High School Medical Plans

    Hello,
I am a 10th grade student at a very respectable high school. I have a 3.7 GPA (out of 4.0), scored a 2050 (out of 2400) on my SAT, and will have 5 science credits instead of the typical 4. I would like to go to Medical School, and am interested to know if there is such a program that accepts students directly to Medical School from High School. I know of the fierce competition of getting into medical school and want to know if there are any opportunities to do something directly out of High School.

    Thanks!

Don't slack off your first year of college, for one thing. It kills you. It's killing my chances of ever going to med school. Also, get involved around campus with whatever you like, be it related to medicine or not, and stick with it to show that you are dedicated. Plus, most student groups will give you valuable community service time.

Well that is a curious question isn't it?

You can go strait into a medical program from high school. They are usually 6 year MBBS programs and not MD programs.

I think there are a few 7 year MD programs in the US, but they are extremely competitive.

The MBBS programs are what are used in England and most European countries.

There is an MBBS program at the University of the West Indies. American university of Antigua has a 6 year MD program, but they are brand new and haven't graduated any students yet so you might want to wait a little while for that program to prove itself. There are also programs in the Czech Republic, England, and Scotland etc.

Look around and you will find a good program that is 6 year rather than the usual 8 in the US.

However, if your parents are able to foot the bill go study something totally unrelated to medicine and enjoy yourself. Take your premeds in the US and try and go to a US school. The US schools have an advantage over international schools when it comes to residency.

One more thing... you will still need to take the same science courses. You just won’t need to take all the undergraduate courses that lead to a major, thus cutting about 2 years off of the programs total time.

Sorry nope, there are many 6yr MD programs out here in the Carib and a few in Poland and Eastern Europe, my school has one and I can think of at least 6 more MD not MBBS. And these are not "skipping" You are still doing undergrad just no degree, in the end MD degree. MBBS is British, Ireland and India mostly.

Maybe you can further help me,
I am a 10th Grade student with a 3.7/4 GPA and a 2050 on my SAT 2 at a very good High School. I do many outside activities and have a pretty good resumee. I am certain that I want to be a doctor, you may say that it's ridiculous to decide that so soon, but I really do. Does anyone know of some of these 6 year programs (BTW why is it 6 year and not 4?).

    Cool whuds,
I knew that AUA had a 6 year MD program but wasn't to sure about the rest. It seams like the big 3 are focused on the basic science and don't do much for the pre meds.

Could you tell us what the 6 schools are that offer a 6 year MD programs?

By the was the MBBS and the MD are the same course work. You just end up with different letters after your name.

The Carribean does not really interest me because it seems sort of primitive, but what are the options.
In Israel, isn't Sackler only 5 years and that is pre-med and medical school>?

Actually, most medical schools outside the US, Canada and the for-profit Carib schools offer 6/7-year courses where you join straight out of high school. The reputable ones certainly offer excellent training. But as previously posted, if you plan to work in the US you'd need to seriously considder going the normal route, i.e. undergrad and then US medical school. Still, it obviously doesn't hurt to apply for the few integrated spots out there, even though they're very competitive.

Why have you decided already that you want to be a physician, and what experience do you have in the field? (shadowing etc.)?
