Hello, everyone. I am back from my interview at Mercy College last week Friday, and I am happy to say that I've been accepted.

The interview lasted about 45 minutes, and I was interviewed by 6 individuals... all at once. Everyone was very nice and the interview went quite well. The questions they asked were typical: background and education, grades, work history, volunteer history, why I want to be a doctor, topical questions about medicine (eg. I spoke about the human genome project and stem cell research), how I plan to finance my education, whether I'm currently in a long-term relationship, as well as travels and living experiences abroad. They even asked questions like what was the last book I read and what I like to do with my free time. After they asked questions, I had the opportunity to ask questions. I pulled out my list and spent about 15 minutes asking them specific questions about the program. One of my big questions was licensure in California. They were very honest and said that it's in the works, but that these kinds of things take time and that I shouldn't attend KMU if working in CA was an absolute must as there is no guarantee that the approval process will be completed anytime soon..

If anything sticks out on your application, be prepared to talk about it and what steps you've made to overcome any difficiencies. For example, I've been out of school for about 7 years, so it's been some time since I studied chemistry and biology. We talked about that and if I've been doing anything to prepare myself for the Fall semester.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me, and I'll be glad to discuss it with you. Like I said, they will ask you the tough questions, so just be prepared, but relax because they were all quite nice.

Re: Back from the interview...

Nope.. sorry, I'm in the 4 year program, but I imagine the interview process and format is similar because during the day of my interview 2 students interviewing for the 6 year program went before me and told me how it went, which was exactly like my interview.

The interview was intense only because I made it that way. That's why I suggest you take a deep breath and relax when you go in. Oh, and smile! They were all very nice, but it was just the gravity of the outcome that made it intense for me.

I don't know if everyone in the room spoke Polish. It seems that one woman did not, but if you speak Polish fluently then I would ask them. They would probably like that.

Definitely go in knowing current events and what interests you. They want to know that you have a passion for medicine and that you stay abreast of current medical topics. You don't have to be an expert on the matters, but you should have some understanding and a definite interest.

Do some homework on the Nobel prize and who the most recent winner is and the research he/she did. They asked me who the person behind the prize was (Alfred Nobel, of course), but then that was it. I'm not sure where they were going with that question.

They were big on the human genome project, at least Prof. Stan was. Do some research on that, as well. I mean, don't kill yourself over it, but read some articles about recent developments. I hope that helps.

Re: edy1234

Congrats!

Regarding the loan, are you a U.S. citizen? If so, you may qualify for up to $18,500 for federal loans. The remaining amount, you'll have to come up with on your own or get financed. FYI, TERI loans, are not that easy to qualify for on your own, especially if you've got bad credit or haven't established credit yet. I didn't try TERI, but I did qualify for a Sallie Mae Student Signature Loan for $4000 to make up the difference. Here's a link, for all three in case you're interested.
