Dorm room situation at KMU (PUMS)

Hi there, I was told earlier that I would be staying at a room in Medyk at KMU (PUMS). The school emailed me informing me that I will be staying in a double room in Medyk (I'll share the room with another person). I visited the school before and I thought ALL the rooms in Medyk and Ayspirinka were single with private bathroom. The rooms I saw were small, good for 1 person only in my opinion. Does anyone have any idea what happened, or can shed some light on this?

does it matter? I think so.

This is a copy of my earlier post addressing this issue:

PUMS information when applying indicated single room housing is available for 4 years. At the interview they said it is now only guaranteed for 2 years. After deposit they are saying rooms are only available if shared -- that is 2 people in a single room. Do they ever get anything right. It looks like this program has been around for about 10 years, why is communication with the college still so disorganized and practically non-existent. It's amazing to read that the English Division students are shown favoritism -- is it possible the Polish students are more misinformed, uninformed, and promised things which don't exist.
One of the few things PUMS had over Jagiellonian was four year housing. At this point their not even pulling through with the one year housing that Jagiellonian provides.
How much of what they advertise can this univeristy come through on?

the only reply I got was from Narcan and is on the same page:

"I didn't choose PUMS for the plush dorms.
Why is it so important to have housing on campus. It's expensive and tiny. You can get a much nicer place off campus. Do American Medical students live on campus for 4 years? I've never known one that did.
If you don't like PUMS, then go to Jagiellonian. Nobody really cares.
And the Polish students are Polish, so they are understand the Polish way of doing things."

I think the "nobody really cares" pretty much sums up the attitude about most issues at PUMS and this one in particular. We aren't supposed to care were supposed to suck it up. And, I don't think the Polish students understand better than the students from North America, they just have a different way of reacting to it.

The first step to curing a problem is realizing there is a problem.

I wonder how Narcan would have felt if a week before he was leaving someone told him he would be sharing his dorm. A picture of it can be found at http://www.valuemd.com/european-russ...my-life-6.html

And by the way if you check into the dorms for the semester they will not refund any payments made towards the dorm room. So, they suggest you only pay for one semester.

If I was told I would be sharing my room then I would. But I would also be working on getting an apartment as soon as I arrived. I think you can argue that they promised you a single and now you have a shared room. Seems to me like you can get out of your housing at the dorm.

And yes, you will have to "suck it up here" your not in the US. No Polish school will be as rosy as you think. PUMS can give you the education you need and I am happy here. But life here in Poland is not anywhere as easy as in the US.

Bubbleboy, I am in the same situation that you are. I was just told that I would be in Aspirynka in a double room. I had asked for a single, so I don't know. I figure they are just having housing issues. What's funny though, is my brother (who's coming for the 6 yr M.D. program) asked specifically for a double, and he has a single in the polish dorms.

Are apartments readily available near pums area. And, what is like an average cost for an average place? per month.

I believe you can find that information at:

http://www.valuemd.com/european-russ...my-life-7.html

it's also posted in other threads -- but on this page it is in system shacks post at the bottom of the page.

Read the whole page to get an idea of rentals available.

Narcan, I'd like to think they were open to refunding the dorm deposit and semester payment, however an email informing me that once I move in there will be no refund leaves me to believe otherwise.

Instead of hitting freshmen with a double whammy -- no four year dorm rooms and no singles ever I would have preferred a more creative solution. Send a notice to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students, those who are still in the dorms, telling them they would be sharing a room. Since most of them are already there (sophomores start in August), I bet the dorms would clear out pretty fast. It is practical to expect them to be able to find rentals; it is not practical to expect freshmen too, especially given the fact most of them have already bought non-refundable tickets which do not allow for time to hunt for apartments nor do most of them have any familiarity with the area. Sure they can do if they have too; not impossible, just impractical.

It is not conducive to the program to pack students in like sardines and it is ludicrous to expect 20 somethings and older to share a room in this situation. I have seen undergraduates at 18 stuck in this type of space, there are schools that actually encourage it for an 18 year old because they are too lonely otherwise. Graduates students if they can't live alone are not ready for the program.

Yeah I hear ya. I think the people in my class that continue to live in the dorm are nuts. I'm 42 years old and the dorm wasn't for me. It's not really that hard to get an apartment here. I thought it would be, but really was pretty easy. And I don't speak hardly any Polish.
