Residence:

Miklos,

That post has been really helpful. Thanks.

Lately I contacted ECFMG, but they don’t have any information besides what I have pasted in my previous post. In addition, I contacted Dr. Thomas Moore, the president of American Association on International Medical Graduates (www.aaimg.com), but once again no information could be obtained regarding the number of IMG or their success in attaining a residence positions.

However, there is an interesting article by Dr. Albert Gordon, that most of the students considering attending a FMS will find informative.

Apparently from the data and statistics of National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and the clearly explanatory post regarding the residence gives me a feeling that as long as I am determined and keen to succeed, and as long as I stay focused and don’t deviate from the goal of getting a MD degree (which I wont as four years of my life, and $60-100K are stake) I should not have a problem.

I am not 100% sure at this point whether I should attend a FMS; however, I have been researching everyday about the program, about the site where the graduates are practicing, licensure, and state approval.

What majore factors should be considered before coming to a firm conclusion of attending a FMS?

1. I've checked about CR, and it is not an issue.
2. I've checked that the graduates are practicing or are in PGY1 or PGY2.

What's the difference:

What would be a difference between doing a CR at an ACGME reviewed hospital in comparison to doing a CR at a non ACGME reviewed hospital?

Also upon completion of two years of basic sciences would it be possible to do a clinical rotation at hospital of my choice? Or is it better to attend a university that has affiliation with one or the other hospital?

clinicals

in order to license in the united states you MUST rotate at an ACGME green book hospital..there are some schools that will allow you to rotate in non ACGME hospitals but you are asking for trouble..you can choose your own hosptial at many universities..just make sure of state laws which are individial in this matter..NY and Cali do not allow more than 12 weeks away from a contracted affiliated program..take care

California actually allows 18 weeks, if I remember correctly (or rather will give a maximum of 18 weeks elective credit).

I think that your financial estimate is on the low side. I'd go back and recalculate it.

Don't forget licensure eligibility, program attrition rates and USMLE pass rates.

In addition, one needs to visit the school in question and speak to students unsupervised. It may be the only way you will find out about the problems (and concerns) they have. That way you won't be shocked when you arrive for your first day.

Good luck.

Miklos

NRMP

Just because a residency program does not fill, means spots are available for anyones taking. While high number of unfilled spots is encouraging, from what I have seen many PD's would rather leave spots empty then fill them with every Tom, D*** and Harry. Having said that, with good scores and good personality it should not be a problem for most. But expect to work at it rather than waltz right in.

actually i think are correct miklos..but its always better to do acgme accredited rotations i think..i know st. matthews allows a certain amount of non greenbook rotations..
as for the open spots..those last a maximum of two days..trust me..my best friend did not even scramble this year and he was an IMG with 2 eyars of clincials in the US but low scores..didnt even match family practice so beware guys..honestly..if you can break an 82 on both exams and get a little bit of US experience and have no visa issues you will have no problems getting peds or family..IM is a little tougher but not impossible..letters of recommendations are huge and the interview is bigger than most people think..also personal statement..make sure you get it professionally edited..hope this helps..take care

yes

they are all greenbook hospitals..greenbook refers to the fact that they have an ACGME accredited residency program in the subject where you are doing the clinical..if htey have family practice residency you are covered by the umbrella rule since family rotates in internal med obgyn surgery and peds..take care..
