If you are coming to Krakow to study, your best bet would be to move into the dorms that the school provides. They are close to classes, inexpensive, and convenient. It is very difficult to find housing when outside of the country. Most of the searches only return tourist housing or long term letting for more than a pretty penny.
Once in Krakow, you can contact an agent, pay a negotiable fee, and have him/her show you the listed apartments. This will save you the trouble of looking and more often than not, these apts are nicer, cheaper, and cleaner than ones you will find on you own, especially if you do not speak Polish or know the system and culture in Krakow. If you do not want to go this route, you can look around the city on your own through many internet and real estate resources. This is very time consuming but many students ended up very happy with great apartments. With students taking this options, they often say "I got lucky" and signed a lease a day or two after the apt went on the market. Option C. You can contact the school office in search of an apt. Many students have already listed their apts as available as they are graduating or rotating abroad. Finally, option D. If you know someone who has an apt in Krakow, talk to them. They might be able to talk to someone who knows someone who will offer you a really good deal. You would be amazed how often this happens and how good of a deal you could get. Good luck. |

Just to reiterate what Eye of Newt said, I would strongly consider the dorms, at least until you get acclimated to the city. From a "caveat emptor" standpoint regarding apartments, it is much easier to know what you're getting yourself into while you are actually in the country versus doing it from overseas.
Also, assuming you're already admitted to the program, you can try posting a "housing wanted" message on the school message board. Apparently, there are many fourth-years who are eagerly seeking people to take over their apartments for a while as they are doing rotation abroad. This is been a very sucessful, yet painless method of getting housing for those in my class who did not go the dorm route. Alternatively, you can just stay in one of Krakow's fanciest hotels for 2+ months while you search for housing. We had one person do this, but I suspect that person to be extremely wealthy, and this is not an option for most of us. |

Eye of Newt
I realize it would be really difficult to find a good apartment in Poland all the way from CA... but I am just wondering how the dorm life is at JAG. I am 21 and have lived on my own for the past three years, so I am a little concerned having to share my space with several people. So any insight would be very helpful ;D ~Thanks!~
