Finished 2 years in Poland through HMI- Am I screwed?
Looking for some good advice here...
I am attending the Medical University of Lublin. Here are my issues: 1) I would like to practice in Texas. I just discovered that Lublin is not on the list of approved medical schools deemed by the Texas Medical board. From what I understand, I would have to provide extensive additional documentation that my medical school is valid... 2)My internal med rotation is ACGME approved at Wyckoff Heights, but none of the other rotations are accredited with the exception of family practice. Will I be able to complete these other rotations at other hospitals that have accredited rotations? 3) Would it be wise for me to transfer to another medical school, say, in the Caribbean? Can someone please advise me on the best thing to do? thanks. Last edited by luckycharmed02; 06-06-2007 at 03:15 PM. |

THINK LONG AND HARD! remember, even if you transfer to Ross or AUC you will still have to provide extensive paperwork because of your transfer between schools (refer to third paragraph).
if you are SET on practicing in texas and WOULDN'T be happy anywhere else. then, i would advise you to look at Ross or AUC. however, you might have to start from fifth semester at both schools. in regards to your second question, ALL CORES have to be done at MUL affiliated hospitals (from what i've gathered on this forum). therefore, even if you do ACGME approved rotations at another hospital but is NOT affiliated with MUL. then, you will most likely run into some problems with licensure in texas. my advise would be to do the ACGME rotations at wycoff and return back to poland and complete the rest of your rotations. that will eliminate any problems with licensure. the same amount of paperwork is required if you transfer. or, maybe even more because you will still have to provide extensive paperwork proving equivalency of your first 2 years at MUL anyway. plus getting all the transcripts from both schools. ONLY YOU can make the decision. Good Luck! Quote:

Would a transfer to one of the other Polish med. schools be possible, and would it help with Texas? I'm making that tentative suggestion simply because I understood that several of them were good for all 50 states.
Also, this extra documentation, is it really difficult? Is it something Lublin could help with? I'm assuming that the school is broadly similar to other Polish schools which are recognized.

transferring is always a risky and tricky business. i personally think that if a particular state means so much to me. i would be willing to do whatever possible to get licensed in that state. even if providing extra documentation to prove equivalency.
in any case, i would think that there are grads from other 4 yr programs in poland (or even from MUL) already practicing in texas. so, really it won't be, atleast thats what i think, that difficult to get licensed there. or, proving equivalency. a school not listed on texas' list doesn't necessarily mean you can't practice there at all anyway. i think the admin at any unapproved school should go the extra lengths to apply for accreditation. the only way the admin will get moving though. is if the students themselves voice their concerns. actually, i'm going to push our admin to do exactly that. since, we have a fair number of texans here. In my experience Central/East European schools often need not so much a push as a sharp kick At the end of the day wider accreditation helps the school raise its profile and marketability.

I would not worry about it
If you want to practice in Texas, find out what states have licensing reciprocity with Texas. Then see if you qualify for a license in any of those states. If you do, you can apply for a lisence in one of those other states and then apply for Texas license based on the fact that you have a license to practice medicine in state X, which has reciprocity with Texas. Analyze, that alternative.
There must be a mistake about the ACGME accredited (or approved?) requirement on each rotation. Otherwise not a single IMG would have a license in Texas. Remember, ACGME has jurisdiction exclusively in the US. Not a single foreign medical school/hospital is "ACGME approved" yet 20% of physicians practicing in the US are foreign. Like someone else said, pressure the school to contact the Texas board. Usually all they must do is fill out paperwork and of course pay a fee. |

Does HMI give you this information? I'm sorry I am just really confused, and would you or anyone else know of any place where I could find some info about rotations and the accreditation in regard to Canada, this still in regards to HMI affiliated students. so if you could please help me out here if you be greatly appreciated. thank you. |
