Does anyone bring sposes to Poland?
I am from the US exploring medical schools outside my country. I initially looked into the Caribbean but my wife hates the idea of being apart for 20 months or so. She could go with me but then there would be very little for her to do on the island. Including employment/volunteer work. This would be a bad combination. Her, very little to do, and me, a lot of studying. So I turned to Europe, and it all looks very good! Especially the price! (we already have 67,000 USD in undergrad and grad student loans) She likes the idea of doing TEFL work (teaching english as a foreign language) plus many more volunteer opportunities. Thus far it all sounds very good, I am just curious if anyone else has brought a spouse to an EU school and what they have done. Thank you.
PS If anyone has any questions regarding residency issues such as the match process, or more or less stuff like "how do I get into this residency" "what would make me competitive" blah blah blah. Feel free to PM me. I work at a large teaching hospital and I have years of experience doing various administrative duties during the match process and I have seen MANY FMGs secure positions in competitive residencies by playing their cards properly. |

If you bring your spouse with you to Europe it will be harder for you to leave her for the Eastern European woman that will soon turn your heart into putty.
You've been warned, brother.

You want a bad combination? Your wife and the thought of you out with "the boys" on a <pick any> night, in <pick any> city in Poland, after she's seen the polish women.
On the other hand, her presence may keep you in line, keeping you out of trouble, focused on your studies, and in the long run saving you quite a bit of money (that you'd otherwise spend on kamikazes, mad-dogs, and "feta"). Caveat emptor? |

as far as you guys really supportive of each other there shouldn't be problem. Keep in mind that in majority of the EE countries language will be barrier and when you are busy attending school, your spouse may get really lonely time to time. It's always nice to have someone supporting you thru this struggle so don't worry you guys will do fine as far as you have determination to get to you goal.
and the bonus is that you could travel around whenever you have chance that's the best part of attending EE schools. good luck |

your wife might keep you in check and focused. you will however have about 10% of the enjoyment the rest of us get out of studying here. and there is a lot of it haha. and it wouldnt be 20 months separation, more like 4-5 months at a time, plus she could visit during semesters as well. that said, as kluver pointed out, once she sees polish women (no exagurration here) she will be jealous of you like there is no tmrw. there is a guy in my class who brought his wife and two small kids with him, she doesnt seem to mind and his kids even less. outside of class tho, i NEVER ever see him. i guess its a completely diff adventure for married ppl to be here. - G |

Thanks for the info guys. However, on the issue of temptation, I believe that is a more personal problem for people. If someone is going to cheat or fool around on their spouse, they are going to do it now matter where they go to med school or what profession they choose. I do believe that some professions create more opportunities for this than others, such as medicine. Long work hours and time apart (from your spouse) and plenty of young nurses on the night shift hitting on you can create temptation. I recently worked with a surgery resident whose wife was pregnant while at the same time he was sleeping with an ER nurse and he got her pregnant. Quite sad really.
To make a long story short, my wife is my best asset. She motivated me to make my 42 credit hours and 2.2 GPA into a ** in biology with a 3.5 GPA and a 28 MCAT. I know I would have never done this without her! So as you can see my wifes happiness has a lot to do with were I/we go to med school. Thanks again for the replies. |

I don't believe that there are any real secrets out there, but I'd be curious to hear what you think. |
