Some info about what you need in Poznan!

I wrote the email out to a incoming student, but figured id be useful for you guys as well!!!

Hello there,

alright well

1. The food here is actually pretty cheap, if not the same as most American restaurants. We have a pizzeria here called Danatellos (You'll know it when ur here) and medium sized pizza is about 10 or 11 zl (thats about 3 or 4 dollars). Drinks here are a bit more, and there are no refills which is something to take in account. At most restaurants I usually wind up spending about 30 to 40 zl, and im a pretty hearty eater too, hehe.

2. WARM STUFF, you're not gonna experience summers here for very long, maybe 4 months combined during your stay in Poznan. It starts getting cold around October time and during my first year it was FROZEN around November time till about March when we saw the sun again.

For my second year it was cold and dark still, but much more bearable than first year. You will still require sweaters and sweatshirts. DEFINITELY bring a winter coat and some warm socks. Its cold here.

It starts getting warm around February and March time, in which pants and shirts are fine, you can definitely bring some spring/summer stuff for the months after. We have BBQs and a lot of us wear shorts. Still bring a windbreaker jacket as well.

Typically you are going to wind up leaving all your winter clothes in Poznan and just coming home with some summer gear, making ur bags light, which means you can come back with cool stuff like junk food

Poland's weather is kinda weird, its best to pretend its a place like Chicago,

3. Apartments are plentiful here, and they will run you anywhere from 700zl and then upwards. I was apartment hunting for a little while, and at one point I couldn't find anything below 1000zl. Then again, i was searching online. Talking to the land owners directly will get you MUCH MUCH better prices I find, and you could be paying somewhere around 800zl a month, which is a pretty good price out here. Just out of curiosity, are you set up for the dorms?

4. Things you'll need out here:

Clothing wont be a problem if you follow the guidelines above, and you can always get anything you need from here such as toiletries and clothes or whatever for some good prices.

Electronics however is a very different story, buy what you need from the States or Canada before you come here. Technology in Poland is very expensive and pretty crappy compared to stuff in the west or Taiwan.

Don't consider buying a computer out here, as a laptop running barely 1 ghz is going to run you like 3000zl. Definitely get one of those things from home.

Whatever kinds of foods you like, bring em with you. They don't have macaroni and cheese here, or Doritos (just coming up with random stuff that I miss). There are some international shops which carry stuff like Poptarts... which are 30zl (10USD haha). So basically when it comes down to junk food or Marinades or spices you use for cooking, bring stuff from home.

Coming back to Poznan for third year, im pretty much only gonna have Junk food and Marinades and spices, and MAYBE some clothes.

OH! and PEANUT BUTTER!!! I've tired the peanut butter here.. its kinda icky.. I miss my Jiffy...

But yeah. Im also gonna post this thing on the forum too, as it will help out the other kids as well!

Anything else, u know where to find me!

Mith

I frequent the boards a lot, but don't post much.

I have my interview this Friday, in Poznan, and imagine that I am pretty much a "shoe-in" for the 07 class. I am traveling from Germany. I will be in Poznan from the 17th to the 20th of May. With that said, I plan to be getting aquainted with the city and just as much as I possibly can with the school. Most important to me is, to find an apartment while I am there. Or at least an Agent or a good starting place. I simply can not live in a room with 1,2 or 3 other people in it. Besides that, I am not the party every day type any more, and have grown to appreciate peace and quiet. (Not that I am old or anything; only 24)

Well, any info that any one can share would be great.
Perhaps I can meet up with another student or something for a drink or tour.

Hey class of 2011, just a quick reminder, please please please, take care of your visa if you are not a polish citizen. You can apply for a temporary stay card here but it will cost you about $100 american, while the visa in the US is free, contact the polish embassy. This is a quick and easy process if you do it with time, the days of border hopping to Berlin are nearing their end, Poland is getting stricter and they will hunt you down and fine you (I speak from experience). Best of luck with all your preparations!
