the DO school that i went to had a DMD program in the same building. one of my friends from college was in dental school there while i was in DO school there. we were both in our first year.

this was the ultimate scenario to compare classes. same overall school and same year of learning. TRUST ME, the classes ARE NOT the same. histo was the only class that was comparable. everything else did not go into nearly as much depth (unless it dealt from the neck up).

i doubt course catalogs can give an understanding of the course content even with the paragraph long description. if chiro dds, and pod school were so similar then those students would breeze through basic sciences and that is just not the case...most had just as difficult time with the courses and received similar grades.

you can't compare the professions and write them off as being the same, they all focus on different aspects and touch only lightly on the other fields...

i.e. i learned foot ankle mouth anatomy, tooth embryology, and the related pathology very superficially, because that is not the focus of my future practice any more than a dentist needs to learn how to grade a liver lac, or how the status epelipticus pathway.
Podiatry students at Des Moines University and Arizona Midwestern University sit in the exact same basic science courses as the DO students and are graded on the exact same curve as the DO students.

There are so many rewarding things to do in para medical fields that it is a shame to start podiatry school in the hopes to transfer to med school.
Scrub nurses, nurses physical therapists, dieticians etc.... These are people that work with patients up close and truly help them. Perhpas they earn less money and less prestige then mds but thats mainly b/c of underappreciation, and if it's this that you seek- biotech medical companies. Offer a good salary and without them medicine would advance at much slower rates.
Just my 2 cents

The ignorance is unbelievable

It's really amazing to me how ignorant some people are who post here. Some of you are literally talking out of the orifice between your legs...YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!! I can verify for a fact that the podiatry students at my medical school (midwestern university in arizona) take EXACTLY the same basic science curriculum as we do as DOs (I'm talking about the EXACT same courses--we sit side-by-side). The ONLY differences in our curriculums for the first two years is that we have OMM courses and other DO-specific courses and they do their podiatry-specific courses (i.e. surgery, anesthesia, biomechanics, etc.). We're talking about a difference of maybe 7 or 8 courses for the entire 2 years that are different. Actually, the podiatry students go during the summer and take courses in surgery and anesthesia and are way ahead of the curve when it comes to those subjects.

I have gotten to know many of the Pod students and I guarantee most of them could be plugged in at any medical school (DO or MD) and be just fine. The difference in training is really during clinical rotations and in residency. New generation podiatrists know way more about the body than we (DOs & MDs) know about the foot. It's comical to see some of you inflated head cases try to make yourselves feel better by trashing on podiatry. They are physicians every bit as much as we are (or will be). Their scope of practice is limited to the foot. That doesn't make them inferior or non-physicians. Get your facts straight before you start running your mouth just to boost your own ego. Believe it or not, some podiatry students CHOSE to go into podiatry over DO or MD or dental school...I know that must rattle your brain, but it's true. Many of them will make a better living as surgical specialists than some of us who are going into family practice or internal medicine. Why do I even give a crap? My soon-to-be wife is a podiatry student and my eyes have been opened WIDE by what I thought before versus what is really true. Just do a little bit of homework before you get too carried away with ridiculous statements.
