advanced placement for podiatrists

Recently a program has been started at Nova Southeastern Osteopathic medical school giving podiatrists advanced placement to obtain a D.O degree. The program will use current podiatry students but the hope is to expand to licensed podiatrists to obtain D.O. degrees.
There has already been approval by state licensing and there are plans for programs in other states.
I recently spoke with another Podiatrist who has contacted U.S medical schools about doing the same programs.
There has always been opposition to giving podiatrists advanced placement in foreign medical schools but it may happen in the U.S.
The doctor who has been developing this program is at New York College of Podiatric Medicine.
I wanted to share this with you.

advanced placement

Thats interesting. When you said US medical schools I am assuming you meant allopathic schools as well as the osteopathic schools that are working on advanced placement.

How advanced are we talking about? A few courses or like an entire year?

NYCOM has an advanced standing program for IMGs. Essentially the first three years, with credit given for the fourth year.

advanced placement

Podiatrists have been pushing for a MD degree for years with no luck. But in the last year or so some medical schools have been responsive to credit for basic sciences taken in podiatry school.
Is only a beginning, but the arguement that there will be a physician shortage in the future has led some podiatrists to push MD again.
One of the podiatrists that I know tried to start a co-operative agreement with an established medical school in Costa Rica years ago but that did not pan out. Now I hear that he is going to try again.
Licensing boards have been contacted by the podiatry lobbying groups to pave the way for acceptance in the U.S. We will see what happens.

difference

This Nova program is only giving 1 year credit, not 2 as IUHS and UHSA are attempting to do and result in the student spending 3 full years in the program, not attending via correspondence/internet or doing 'mentor' studies. This is a legit medical program and would appear to me to have a chance of getting approval by the DO licensing boards. You also note that they are limiting it and not allowing previous grads in; must have something to do with training tracks or the way podiatry students have been taught recently? Very interesting stuff.

Podiatry has been suffering greatly recently

Rumors say that this program in Costa Rica was at one time coordinated through the UIA school of Medicine or at least with the Dean of that Medical School (no longer Dean since the Medical School was almost closed down by the National Board of Education due to alleged irregularities, since then it has full re-instatement but its former sister medical school the UC school of medicine - did lose its license). The Hospitals and the National Board of Education of Costa Rica had/has no knowledge of what was going on; but has since been notified.
At last notice, we were informed that allegedly new attempts @ contact have been made with the San Judas Tadeo School of Medicine - through the Dean of Medicine R.G., M.D.
If someone would like to know the real problems with this type of program in Costa Rica, please feel free to contact us; at the following e-mail:

I'm glad I didn't go into podiatry. Reading all those posts in SDN about it was depressing to say the least. I do have to thank a whole bunch of person from valuemd for convincing me not to go into it. (I now ridicule them in school and on valuemd... its my way of saying thanks).

i dont see how this will alleviate the shortage of med schools in florida as another poster said in another thread that was locked.

nova already has matriculating DO classes in the 200's. and it was a tight squeeze by having to rotate with labs. they really cant fit more than a handful extra into the program. this will not make a difference in the med school shortage.

secondly, if this program takes off...... then im sure they will accept less students to make room for the guarenteed slots that they will alot for the podiatry students.
