In the UK we do not have a shortage of doctors this is a myth. 40% of doctors registered with the GMC are unemployed. There are more doctors unemployed than vacancies for them to fill. The government will not pay for a doctor when they can have 2 PAs or 10 nurses.

It is not more doctors that we need but more jobs for them to fill. We have over 4000 medical students graduating each year but only 600-700 PRHO /F1 positions for them to go into which is why I am doing my intern year abroad that way I can go straight into an SHO position. If I can't get an accredited SHO job to begin my specialist training then I do temporary unaccredited ones until a position becomes available but at least I will be earning.

PAs and NPs (and more recently ECPs) are a cheap way of filling the void which the government have created by not being prepared to pay for doctors. A junior doctor can expect to earn £17,000 plus unsociable hours allowance taking their salary to £38,000 while a consultant earns £90,000 minimum plus a bonus of up to £90,000 dependent upon performance.

Massive imbalance in money distribution.

This is quite insulting to all of us who have gone to medical school. Our schools are listed under WHO, we pass the exams; yet we are glorified nurses?! If Canada wants to alieviate the shortages they have two options 1) open more schools, 2) make it easier to come back.

After all my hard work I will accept nothing less than parity in Canada. If this is too much to ask for Seattle is only 2.5 hr south.

I love Canada but their protectionist mind set is only going to drive off talented, and qualified canadians. No matter where I end up I will have a good career. The only losers are our fellow Canadians.

Why would anyone choose to become a PA? Why not actually become a proper doctor?

How do nurses feel about PAs? Nurse practitioners have trained over many years and have trained to the same level as a doctor only for someone who wasn't good enough for med school to take two years training and then issue them with orders.

It is sad that the UK has brought in American PAs but that is simply because we do not have enough doctors. We need to work on correcting the doctor shortage rather than draft in underqualified people. The same goes for the US. Why get someone who has had half the training when you can have a proper doctor?
Objectively speaking this guys a newbie and his info is FULL of errors!!

If that is so, what are the salaries for PA in Canada. I believe they should be highly competitive as in US
