can you still apply to a DO school if you fail out of med school in the carribean?
510 points can you still apply to a DO school if you fail out of med school in the carribean?
510 points No. Osteopathic Med schools average incoming GPA is a 3.4 undergrad, and a MCAT that is inline with a US Allopathic School. Which school?
514 points I wouldnt look at it as "if" I fail out. Dont fail out! That aside, maybe if you go back do some post-bac work, and make a nice application it might be possible.
Yes.
I know one guy who did it. He flunked out of foreign MD school.
But, he had no financial aid in MD school, he was paying out of pocket. That was key. Loans were the only real trace that he had been to a foreign med school....so he lied to the DO school. He didn't tell them about MD school....only undergrad, and his undergrad GPA and MCAT scores were good enough.
He got in.
I won't say what school. Obviously such a stunt can not only get you expelled, but even get your license pulled years later. Never, ever lie about your education or credentials.
Ethically I feel OK now about it, because he flunked out of DO as well. But I was in a bit of a twist when I found out about him. I mean....what do you do when you find a quack (in training) and you're just a student? I struggled with that......
510 points Well, I would never lie like that....I was just wondering if it was possible to be accepted to a DO school after failing out, with them knowing fully what happened. My undergrad GPA is fine and my MCAT was borderline okay. Just barely didn't get into US med schools so I went to a foreign one instead.
I know it's not an optimal situation and I'd like to be able to say that I won't fail out, but it would be nice to know that I'd still have a chance at becoming a doc if I did.
Thanks
That is an absolutely silly question, DO schools are far more selective than Caribbean schools. Caribbean schools are basically for people who got rejected from North American schools, MD and DO. If you cannot hack it in the Caribbean, its extremely unlikely that you will get into a DO school.
512 points SGU has admissions stats above most DO schools. AUC has stats above some DO schools. So your blanket statement is false.
It almost seems like AACOM dispatches trolls to all the med school forums to pump up osteopathic medicine. (Obnoxious, dismissive trolls, at that.)
