8-10 new DO schools are scheduled to open in the near future

Will this effect the chances of US FMGs for getting residencies? Already in a different there was mention of cases where DO schools outbid some carribean schools for rotation sites.

Where did you read this?

If true, it could make things much more competitive for IMGs in the future if the federal cap on the number of residencies is not lifted.

My reasoning;

Let's say that each of these schools has an average class of 100 students, that means another 1000 students looking for residencies upon graduation. Currently, we know that there are about 23,000 - 24,000 ACGME PGY1 residencies available. US Seniors snag about 16,000. That leaves about 7,000 - 8,000 spots available for independent applicants. Currently, about 6,000 IMGs without PGY1 experience gain spots each year. Something on the order of 1,300 DOs get PGY1 spots each year as well. The remainder are filled by past US grads or Canadians or past IMGs.

Placing another 1,000 into the pool is bad news for the IMGs given that;

a) DOs appear to outcompete IMGs in choice specialties. See my post on this forum about that.
b) The aforementioned cap is not lifted.
c) Lots of AOA (e.g. DO only) residencies are not created. Currently, one of the major reasons that DOs end up in ACGME residencies is that they simply don't have enough of them.

Again, a lot of ifs...

There are at least five to open soon; Touro/Harlem, Robert Morris in Pittsburgh, KCOM/AZ, NW in WA and another in TN.

sources?

can you please state the sources where you people are hearing about the new DO schools..?

also, when will they open?.. if the school is not even built yet, then how many years till these schools are actually running? the reason i say this is becasue these schools may not actually affect many of us applicants/students in the present time. perhaps in the future there will only be fp or nothing available to carrib. but for now, lets not worry if it isnt broken....

I dont remember where i heard it, but it was a credible source. I think someone else in this thread mentioned a few that he/she heard will open in the near future.

DO schools are already "stealing" clinical sites from many good carribean schools like SGU and ROSS. There have been a few instances where a DO school outbidded a carribean on the right for their students to rotate at a location.

Well, it's only logical. D.O schools are American schools, and get to pick first. I know it sucks, but I think we can expect more of that in the years to come
