International applications -- to more than one school(?)

I've noticed that applying through ACER limits applicants to interviewing at *one* Aussie school. But Sydney and Flinders both have their own downloadable application for international applicants...

Does this mean that by using those applications, and using ACER to apply to Melbourne and Brisbane, that one could get interviews at both Flinders and Sydney, and then another (via ACER) from one of the two others? In other words, can international applicants get more than a single interview?

Hi,

You're right! You can get more than one interview. The University of Sydney changed the rules last year and allowed students for the first time to apply directly to the school. So this is possible. Also, if your marks meet the requirements and you have finished your MCAT, I would suggest applying for the Early Decision Program at Flinders. That way you'll know earlier about at least one school. USyd takes until October to tell you if you've been admitted so it's kind of nerve racking. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. But not sure about EDP at Flinders (Usyd may be my top choice)...wouldn't want to commit prematurely Or is EDP in Australia non-binding???

Hi there,

You can apply to USyd through an organization called ACER and I've been told that from next year, you can apply directly to the school. They require you to have a Bachelor's degree (either a general or honours) and meet a certain average. They work on a 7.0 scale but if you send them your transcript, they or ACER will do the calculations for you. You have to write the MCAT and go to an interview as well. I read in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, that for the 2003 intake, 149 students applied for 40 international spots, 50 of the applicants were Canadian. It depends where you live. If you live in Ontario, you'll probably go to New York City for your interview. If you live on the west coast, then you'll head down to LA for your interview.

2. What is the average GPA and MCAT scores for admitted students?

USyd says that you need at least an 5.5/7.0 to be invited for an interview. I don't know how that relates to our 4.0 scale but again, if you send them a transcipt, they do all the calculations for you. As for MCAT scores they ask for a min of 8/8/8 and a M but this can change year to year.

3. Can an Australia med school grad practice in Canada or the US?

Well, this is a definite risk you take when you even think about leaving Canada. I can't really answer this question since I haven't even started my first year yet. You have to write a bunch of tests for Canada and the United States. People have done it and students that go to the Caribbean find a residencies in the United States all the time so I don't think (and I hope not) that an Australian degree will be too difficult.

Questions about U. Melbourne

I am a US citizen and am finishing a M.S. in Human Genetics. I have just been accepted to U. Melbourne and obviously have several questions. I will likely get into at least one US school, but would rather be in Australia. I am interested in surgery, and would like to know about the Australian M.D. program (is it similar to the U.S. MD/PhD program?). How long does it take?
Also, if I go, how competitive will I be for a surgical residency in the US? If I wanted to, could I live in Australia afterwards?
I did a semester abroad in Melbourne as an undergraduate and met several students in the "colleges" who were in medicine. Will I live there as a graduate medical student, or do I have to look for an apartment, and how hard is that?

Finally, do you think I would be making a big mistake by not going to school in the US?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm really torn here.

Hi,

I'm a Canadian and I'm heading to USyd in Feb too. I know two other people from Canada that are going as well. I was told that there are about 20 Canadians for every year of the program. It's so sad that so many Canadians have to leave home to fulfill their dreams. See you Feb.

Hi, I would like to know from students who are in USY how did they go about finding a place in Sydney upon their arrival. I am most likely starting in February and would like to know what is usually done about accommdations. Also, how much is the average rent for a small studio not far from the school?

I thank anyone who can give me any input on the matter..
