    hair loss help!

    Hi,

    I am a 22 year old male. I have been loosing my hair since I was 19 and I would like to address the problem now and stop it in its tracks. It's only early in the stages, I still have a full head of hair on top but I have a rapidly receeding hair line at the temples. I would like to take natural vitamins and herbs to help promote hair growth. From my research people recommend;

A good multivitamin for Hiar, skin and nails (should contain Biotin > 2000mcg, and B vitamin compelx)
Saw plametto (How much do I need?)
He Shou Wu or Fo-Ti (How much do I need?)
Stinging nettle or Pygeum (Which is best, how much do I need?)
Flaxseed oil (Will fish oils do the same?)

I am a student and i dont have much money, also where I live there isnt many health food stores I can talk to or by products from, so it has to be all online.

Lots of people say to buy a good multivitamin, but no one can tell me which brands are good! It would also be best if I could get everything in one or two products for ease of use.

If there is anything else you can recommend please let me know.

I know a few people who had tremendous results. They use a bionic mesh which has artificial hair. Yields extreme results. However it costs about three grand... but check it out. Hair Loss Treatments for Men & Women- Hair Club

I think saw palmetto is probably the best bet as it is used in Europe to treat BPH, however, theres no sure fire cure unfortunately.

Surgical treatment like hair transplantation and can be helpful for men with advanced balding.Other hair loss treatments such as vitamin supplements, herbal remedies, homeopathy and ayurveda have also been suggested for hair loss .

    Really ??

    Dear AUCMD,

I would have to agree and somewhat disagree with you.....yes, many are taking megadosages of vitamins/minerals for no good reason, and no indication, HOWEVER, for many of my patients I do recommend at least a good multivitamin/mineral to fill in the void of their poor diet...also, as you probably recall from our AUC lectures....prenatals are standard of care these days (folic acid, Iron etc..), and in many states with limited natural sun exposure vitamin D3 is recommended as well (1000IU)..Patients with Hx of etoh use...B vitamins, mainly thiamin are prescribed...in the ICU often patients with Acetominophen toxicity are prescribed NAC....there are many other examples of deficiencies (Beriberi, scurvy etc...) when vitamins or minerals are indicated as well....

A good "multi nutrient" is important as a preventive, but NOT as a replacement for a good diet and exercise....I usually go by the rule of subtraction first addition last....Subtract alcohol, coffee, simple sugars, saturated fats, BEFORE you start mega dosing with minerals and vitamins.....Work on your diet, and exercise, lifestyle changes (sleep, stress control.) first !

    Best,

there are vitamins that have places that help like b12, vitamin a, etc when there is a medical deficiency needing it. however regardless of what the vitamin industry tells you, most people aren't vitamin deficient. nutritional quality deficient yes, mentally deficient sure, but if you eat food in the western world you are not vitamin deficient..even the garbage from the burger joints has enriched garbage making the food from the ingredients.

i'm not a big fan of medicines either and recommend even a marginal diet over any medications i prescribe because everything has side effects

on the same note you do realize that the 8 glasses of water a day is a myth and a marketing ploy right? unless you are a firefighter in a blaze or run marathons for your daily routine you are NOT dehydrated and DO NOT need 8 glasses of water. that little tid bit was taken from a paper that estimated the TOTAL requirement of water for an average person. in this case total meaning all water intake including water in our food..after all milk, fruit, tea, juice etc all contain water so again if you eat food you are likely well hydrated and not nutritionally deficient unless you are in the aforementioned professions of course

you are right, i am a doctor and as such i make decisions based on science and best available facts not on rumor or the latest issue of any "Health" magazine where each "article"is coincidentally followed with ordering information for whatever wonder vitamin the "article"was about. at the same time i don't rely on those biased rags from the medical community with "research"in between 8 page color advertising lay outs. gotta read med line, look through ovid and for Gods sake have some common sense and remember your biochemistry

so use the vitamins, beleive me i'd rather have your money in the toilet than in a pfizer profit report. and i am negative on stuff that doesn't work like vitamins or most chemo....

Actually, with regards to water intake, good Rx is to drink 50% of your body weight in ounces !

if you are 100lbs, drink 50oz
200lbs, drink 100oz per day etc....

    best,

    Hi there,
Firstly relax. Donít get stressed as it is a major cause of hair loss. Only take or apply any medical products after consultation with a physician. Also most women after pregnancy face this problem, and it should not be a major concern. I would recommend you follow a proper line of treatment which will help you in resolving your hair problems.
