    new MAY 2011 pre-med students

Just got accepted into the pre-med program, though i wanted the MED1 program. Anyways, any other students most likely starting in MAY?

Also let me know if you have current pre-med books for sale and if you have any suggestions on the dorms/meal plan, or anything in general. I gladly welcome your opinions.
    thanks

Wow thats crazy lol..MUA must be improving their admission standards cause I had the same exact stats but I got a 21S on the MCAT with a 2.8 GPA with a Heath Science Degree..and I had a Withdrawl, and 2 repeats on my transcript and an F during my first year of undergrad. But trust me you'll do just fine. I did better my first semester here than I had done in any semester of undergrad. You just learn what works best for you on how to study. As far as the MUA pre-med program, if I were you I'd try to avoid it at all cost. Try your best to appeal the admissions decision by asking them to see your grades after this semester. You will find that the pre-med program at MUA does not do a good job at preparing you for Medical school at the university and from what I've seen and heard its the pre-med students who've made it through MED who have either done really bad and/or repeated courses. Essentially the pre-med track is just paying to be babysat on an island. I'm sure you are well qualified at another Caribbean school for a different semester seeing that September semester is the hardest and most competitive.

graduated with B.S in Biology: 2.8 gpa, 20 mcat. good LORs, and clinical experiences. I have all my pre-reqs, i was denied acceptance to MED due to my gpa being less than 3.0 [based on what the admission commitee told me].

They don't require you to have all your sciences completed, you just need at least 60 credit hours from college. YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY APPLY TO THE SEPTEMBER PREMED you never know. If you can get your GPA up ur chances will definitely improve. but i think your gpa is fine for pre-med.

I really haven't started on my immunization records yet though i think i have 90% of it completed already. I Just need to do the extra immunizations and HIV test. For the other forms: dorm/police clearance i have those completed already.

As soon as i can get my finances figured out, i will book my flight and also send some of my stuff down there, then get some books.

How is your preparation coming Dr. Cosmos?

Well my big concern is just getting the funds before the March 1st and 15th deadline. They told me that the immunization and the police records can take place later. So the priority for me is the funds. Plane tickets are looking to be pretty pricey. Judging from your username I am guessing that you are going from Texas?

Yes i am from Texas. Yeah same here, called every bank, due to the recent economy no one is giving out loans private to uncertified schools...alot are school certified so i can't get loans. Looking towards other options. I spoke to the financial aid office i think Canadian students can get loans to cover premed, but U.S students can't. Good luck with that though. Also don't stress too much about that march 15th deadline, the late fee is just $200. As for flight tickets, yup definitely pricey.

    Hi All,

I was accepted into MUA premed for May 2011 also. It's tough that loans aren't offered for the premed portion. An easy fix (if you're a U.S. citizen) is to simply enroll part time in an online university and start a Masters or finish undergrad. Use the financial aid refund to pay for the premed courses. It's cheaper if you enroll in a college in your home state so that you can get in-state tuition. Maybe major is something like physical education or Art history (You know, just get the money and take easy courses that can be completed once a week in a couple of hours). You don't have to finish the degree; this is simply a temporary fix for funding until you progress to Med1 and can get an MUA loan.

Flight tickets direct from Miami to St. Kitts are about $680 round trip on American Airlines, depending on the day you fly (i.e. flying Monday is cheaper than Sunday).

Hope to see you guys on the island!!

    Hey guys
I just got accepted for May 2011 premed.
Are you guys buying books before going to the island? I'm a little confused in terms of where and when to get the books. Can someone clarify this for me please.
    Thanks

Hey congrats Ishaan. As for me i am getting my books online before i leave. Because i don't know if i am gonna have time to worry about buying books on the island. You can get the books anywhere and whenever you want. ebay, amazon,halfprice....or buy it from other premed 2 students.

Hope to see you in class in May!!

    Hi,
I am from Toronto and got accepted to MUA premed. I was wondering what the process is in mua premed. Do we need books for MUA premed or are the books available? Also, what do I need to transfer from premed to Med1?

Congrats Bamstify. Yes you do need to buy the premed books...they are not free if that was your question, they are available for sale on the island or preferably you should get them before you go of to MUA. And it wouldn't be a transfer, more like a smooth "transition" if you have a GPA greater than 3.0 after premed, you just start MED 1 the coming semester if you maintain that GPA.

    Hope that answers your question
    See you in May sir!!
