Thread: Everyone Write To MUA

Hi all my fellow MUAers. Can everyone please get on the administrations case about removing this stupid policy of waiting 40 weeks before we can register for Step 2 CS. This is so retarded, we will miss the match if this policy remains we will be at a huge disadvantage. I understand about waiting to get clinical experience before we take it, but at least let us register so we don't have to wait MONTHS for the CS. CS is only offered at limited times and ask students in rotations, this is causing such a headache and uproar.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can we all get on this administrations case about this. THIS AFFECTS US ALL. Whether your in Med 1,2 or 5 you will eventually face this dilemma.This is pretty much wasting a year for me and many other clinical students and ROSS, St George and many other carrib schools don't have this idiotic policy !!!!!!

Ok, 40 WEEKS? Starting when? This is very important information for those of us researching the school. If it puts us a year behind, I will be looking elsewhere.

The current rule is must complete following before you can write CS
- Internal Med Rotation
- Be in middle of surgery rotation or completed
- Completed 40 week of rotations

So let say you start in Sept 2011 and do rotation back to back. You wont finish your 40 wk up until about June or July 2012. At this point you can register for CS and that means you wont get your results well past the Sept 2012 deadline for residency applications. 1 year wasted !!!!

Even if you started clinicals in May 2011 you would still be pushing to make the 2012 match cause your 40 weeks are done around March-April 2012. It takes about 2 - 3 months to get CS results. Plus getting time to write CS is the biggest issue cause its only offered in limited time slote, not like step 1 which you can do every day.

I am not bashing MUA or anything here.
I am very grateful for the opportunity to become a physician, but I have loans and a family and 1 year of sitting on the coach and watching my $200K + loan accumulate interest is very wrong !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's interesting that I have not seen anything about this posted before. I am going to look into it. I also will be bringing a family along with me in this adventure and need to think out all possibilities.

You know why they don't mention it cause people would not apply and they lose $$$$.

Please look at jenniferhawke .com This is a medical student from MUA who sat her COMP in April 2009 Passed Step1 in July Started Clinicals in August 2009 Sat STEP2 CS in May and Step2 CK in June 2010 and is now all completing her last rotation She had lots of interviews but prematched with a University program.

By the way did you ask the Clinical Coordinators your question when they came over to Nevis after 4th Block every semester ? If you did what was the answer they gave you?

That's what I meant by not seeing this issue more. I have never seen a complaint about it. And look at all the people that do make match. You will not get an answer from admin on here. I read Jennifers blog awhile ago and a couple others and never saw this problem. If it is universal, then it does need to be fixed.

never had any problem registering for the CS after completing my 3rd year core. By the way it is good advise to complete IM and most of your core rotations when you do sit for the CS. Same with Jennifer, I took the CS before CK. Took me only a week to prepare for it and passed it well. I think it was because I never really complained and did as many HnP's as much as I could during all of my core rotations. I think the school policy is good advise. I know some students that didnt make it through the CS on first attempt. I dunno why...but the only way you would fail the CS is if you have not done enough clinical exposure. If you really think about it, it's just a matter of taking a history, doing a focused exam, then making sure you have not missed anything in order to come up with a reasonable differential dx and subsequent work-up...all under a certain period of time. If you have done enough clinical exposure it really comes down to ...... trying to eat a big slice of german chocolate cake in just under 30 seconds!!! I dont blame the school for setting such policy. Remember they have to make policies to cover the whole studentry not just you.

You are missing the point. I agree with completing you about having adequate prep before sitting for CS. But at least let us just REGISTER for the exam so we don't have to wait months when our 40 wks are finished.

It takes about 3 months average to get a seat for CS. For some people 3 months is the difference of making this years match or not. Why makes us sit there and not possibly miss a match.

I know a lot of people in rotations and in basic sciences have been calling and writing the administration. We just need to bring it up to the admin that this is a big problem cause they don't understand.

Please keep calling and writing to them. It'll take 10 mins out of your time, but may end up saving you a YEAR.
