hi, i'm a 5th semester basic science student getting ready for usmle as of right now.........my plan is to do psych first, and then move to nyc to do all my cores...............i'm assuming the 4 cores other than psych will take me 8-12 months to complete assuming a break or two between them........therefore i want to be in nyc the whole time. my question is, after i finish the cores at wycoff.........what about the electives? can i do my elective rotations at wycoff also? as of right now, i'm looking at internal medicine.........so the electives don't have to be any big specialty ones.........but can i do my electives in nyc also? thanks.

You can do all your electives at Wyckoff, but there is a fee of $100/wk.

The main thing to keep in mind is that since Wyckoff is MUA's only real affiliate in NY, you're really limited in doing electives at proper teaching institutions if you want to do all your clinicals in NY. This goes back to the issue of what is and what isn't "greenbook". Yes you can do all your electives at Wyckoff, but this may come back to bite you. My suggestion is to do whatever electives in Wyckoff have actual fellows rotating in the particular department, and then use your "12 weeks" to do electives in other hospitals in NY (and even these won't necessarily have proper teaching going on but at least there is something on paper). Then you'll have to do some electives outside of NY. Remember, when you do rotations at proper teaching institutions, not only will they be more legitimate when it comes down to licensing later on, but you'll really enjoy the teaching experience and you'll get more out of it.

Hey, someone mentionned a 100$/week fee to do all cores in wyckoff....why is that? Pardon the ignorance but we're paying tuition so I'm wondering why they'd tack on an extra fee (and especially when NY is so pricey to live.....), interesting.

cores are free at wyckoff..but if u do electives there, it's $100/wk, for whatever reason..no one really explained it...

Did any past student who either did neuro or radiology at wyckoff have any trouble with NYS Medical Board or obtaining Residency in NYS?

Not all electives are for a price. There are certain electives that are free, and are as follows (according to their hand-out):
Adult ER (2/4)
Anesthesiology (2/4)
Neurology (2/4)
Pain Management (2/4)
Pathology (4)
Radiology (2/4)

The rest of the electives are for a fee of $100/wk. The numbers in brackets are the # of weeks you can do those electives.

Rotations does not work the way you're posting it. It depends on what rotations are available for you to start in by the time you pass the steps. If you insist on starting with psych you might have to sit out a long..long....long....long....long....time, and could potentially miss your match. My advise is, dont think about rotations for now, focus onthe steps and make sure you get the best possible score. Rotations will just come your way. We dont have a lot of clinical sites that are ACGME for the particular rotations. The only place you can get just about all of your rotations to be ACGME is at Wyckoff and Houma. The rest are ACGME for just IM or family med, or psych. I cant really blame the school as they are trying to get clinical sites. However, it is getting hard to get clinical spots that are ACGME as more and more program directors are becoming biased towards carib med schools.
