Thread: Rotations outside affiliated hospitals?

I was wondering if anyone knows if you could do rotations outside the affiliated hospital list. I know certain states (NY) allows you to do it as long as you get a letter from your school. Also if they do allow you, do you know they reimburse you (some hospital charge a fee for working in their hospital.) THanks

The rule in New York State is that you can do a total of up to 12 weeks of rotations in hospitals that are not affiliated with your school. You also have to apply for a letter of eligibility from the state medical education board (this is separate from the one that you have to get before doing rotations in an affiliated hospital; do this a few months before the start of your rotation and hound them if you don't get a response within 6 weeks). The only exception to the 12 week rule is rotations done in VA hospitals, but you should look further into that. Unfortunately, as far as I know Wyckoff is the only hospital affiliated with our school. Somehow St. Matthew's managed to get an affiliation with Mt. Sinai so I think they can do unlimited rotations there.

Are you really sure of this? Is this the rule of MUA or rule from NY state medical board? My understanding is that any rotation (in MUA affiliated hospitals or not) is acceptable as long as the hospital where you do rotation is green book and you get prior approval from MUA (they sign some papers and I suppose some money gets transferred too! And I am sure that when MUA and the new hospital signs those papers, it sort of becomes an affiliated hospital). Further it looks like you arrange for elective rotations on your own anyway. The 12 week maximum was there when MUA was not NY approved. You are not talking about this, right?

I heard that you can only do rotations outside the affiliation if the school allows you to. So i wanted to know if the schools allows and if they reimburse you if the hospital charges (I heard some hospital charge if there is no affiliation). But thanks for the responses
