Jackson Park Hospital

Has anyone done rotations here? How are they? Where is the best place to live? On their website they say "Rotations are ACGME Accredited under our Family Practice Residency Program" -- Is this for all core rotations?

Great learning hospital - but it is known locally as a death trap.

Why a death trap, is that because it is in the center city and not safe.

No, the facility is old and dated (Think 1913). They also don't get the cream of the crop in residents there either. Because they are a dated hospital and poorly funded. The area they are in has a moderate crime rate - but you are near the projects area of south side Chicago. So you have lots of lower income people older people. If you are interested in family practice geriatrics - you will see tons here.
It is very FMG friendly hospital and program (see link) however, you will be worked to death there. They are a poorly funded program so they never are full staffed at the levels needed to support the community around them.

Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center - Departments/Programs - Family Medicine Residency - Residents' Album

It is not in the center of the city. Downtown Chicago is very safe. You have the L, you have plenty of police protection there because there are tons of major company's centered there.

hope this helps!

From their website: my comments in ()

Jackson Park Hospital & Medical Center is a 326-bed acute, short-term comprehensive care facility, serving the south side of Chicago since 1913. The hospital offers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient diagnostic, therapeutic and ancillary services with a commitment to medical education at all levels. The hospital offers full medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric, psychiatric, and substance abuse rehabilitation services as well as medical sub-specialties including cardiology, pulmonary, gastrointestinal disease, renal, orthopedics, ENT, ophthalmology, infectious disease, HIV/STD, hematology/oncology and geriatrics. Quality ambulatory care is provided through the family medicine center (FMC), senior health center (SCC) and Korshak center (sub-specialty clinics, including HIV/STD clinics), conveniently located within the same premises. The emergency department projects approximately 25,000 patient visits annually with full-time attending physician coverage, nurse practitioners, resident physicians and medical students.
The hospital also provides medical education and training through its family medicine residency program and several affiliated medical schools.
The hospital serves a very high indigent population. Approximately 80 percent of the hospital's patients are covered by Medicare and Medicaid. Since 1959, Jackson Park Hospital & Medical Center has invested more than $32M (This is actually a very small amount less than $665,000 per year on improvements) in expansion and renovation to provide services that were previously unavailable in the community it serves and yet constantly striving to better serve the growing needs of the community.

JPH rocks! It's basically in a war zone. You'll send patients in a for a routine CXR and find old bullets that have been there for years. You'll run for a code and, instead of finding two dozen people in front of you, you'll jump in and start CPR. You'll see a lot more variety in the ages of IM patients because you'll get 25-year-olds with cocaine induced MI's and some very premature liver failures. Lots of opportunity if you're prepared to ask for it. Absolutely no diversity in patient population: 100% African American. But it's the only place I've seen sickle cell anemia pts. Do FP there and get as much inpatient exposure as you can. They won't assign you much call so ask for it. It's only green-booked for FP so doing other cores there might eventually cause problems with anally-retentive state medical boards like Cali and TX. If you get Dr. K-u-m-a-r, you'll be at the hospital before 5AM six days a week, and be treated as a resident. I hear it's because residents won't work with him. His students get stressed out and want to hurt each other. Just like a real residency. If you don't get Dr. K, they won't notice if you show up or not. You could use this opportunity to slack off big time, but it will bite you in the *** in the long run.

Patients don't choose to go to JPH, so the patient load will be underwhelming in OB/GYN and surgery. And, for some reason, there's hardly anything to do on the Psych rotation so I hear. It's probably the best ER experience anywhere. They will treat you like an ER resident and you'll see some awesome pooh pooh. Visit their website and contact Barbara W. for more details.

Like I said a Great place to learn and see stuff. I remember all to well the first sickle cell anemia pt. He was a 10 year boy who looked like he was 6-7 years old - Jees he could scream so loud before they tried to take blood. So two people had to hold him down very carefully while the third took blood.
