rotations before USMLE step 1...

It all depends on what school you go to. Some schools let you do all your rotations before you even write Step 1. However, you'll be rotating through a selected hospital -- where teaching is almost non-existing. Unfortunately, our school requires us to write Step 1 before starting any rotations partly because we would better represent our school and build a great foundation with the hospital.

You are allowed to start elective rotations during the period of waiting for your Step 1 score. If you are in a rush to graduate early or giving yourself extra time to study for Step 3 getting H1 Visa (for Canadians) -- then take that option -- ie. Harbor Hospital, St. Anthony (both Chicago and Oklahoma -- and many more -- call up the hospital of your interest and ask them).

I've spoken with several in Class of 2008 who did their psych rotation before USMLE results.

No.. you have so much time to do it.. I could check the AAMC website.. but I am just too lazy tonight.

Some schools require you pass step one first before rotations. The main issue is.. most teaching hospitals will require you to have passes step one. They don't want you studying for step one while they are trying to teach you.. even though you will eventually be studying for step two. This is what I was told by a few hospitals.

If your school is fairly sure you passes step one, they may allow you to take a simple rotation.. like psych..

Have to pass step 1

With MUA, Like with most schools, as John posted above, YOU DO HAVE TO PASS STEP 1 BEFORE clinicals...except Psych... in some cases. Which is cool, because then you can get on with clinicals while waiting for Step 1 scores (in confidence, of course )
