I'm finishing up my IM rotation here in a couple of weeks. As far as my experience goes, I think this is one of the best rotations that MUA offers in terms of the amount of teaching that they give you. It's definitely not for the light-hearted because from day 1, they treat you almost like an intern and you are expected to quickly fill in the gaps in your knowledge. However, the residents are very friendly with the students and they treat you as one of their own as well.

You get to rotate through different settings here; the regular medical floors, ICU and Telemetry. Usually it's 4 weeks in each setting, but I wanted more floor exposure, so I did 6 wks on the floor and only 2 in Telemetry. The ICU part of the rotation here is what really makes this IM rotation shine; Dr. P who is the head of critical care is really smart and a really nice guy as well. And his teaching style is very laidback and systematic (the man loves lists). That said, the floors are great as well; because you can typically pick up anywhere from 1-2 patients and basically 'manage' them as your own with your intern and resident helping you along the way.

On the floors, you work in a team; you are assigned to one upper-year resident and one intern. You follow the same call schedule as your team, but you can leave by 10 (or earlier if your resident lets u go). Weekends are optional. This is similar to Telemetry, except there are no calls for Telemetry. While on the floors, there is a mandatory teaching session in the morning every day, followed by morning report, followed by noon conference. Telemetry has its own teaching session every morning as well as noon conference.

In the ICU, you typically aren't 'assigned' to anyone; you work with whichever intern is responsible for the patient you are following. In the ICU, we have morning and afternoon rounds, which is where most teaching occurs. There is also an afternoon teaching session as well as the regular noon conference.

i will have a rotation there starting jan 11 (i don't know why, but it's starting on a thurs). with 12 weeks, it ends on april 4, or a wednesday. i really need to get off those last couple days to start a rotation at another location (only starts mondays at the beginning of the month, or april 2, i don't want to loose a whole month).

i've heard that if you need a few days, they shouldn't have a problem with that. do you see them having issues with that, or do you see them just letting you go a tad bit early?

Assuming that you are doing an internal medicine rotation, the reason it starts on a thursday is because that is the change of service day. As for being able to leave early, you could probably call the school and ask them to let u start a couple of days earlier.

In this the only hospital in CT, that we do rotation.

Has anyone done Neuro at St. Vincent's? I'm scheduled there for Oct 22. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Also has anyone done any rotation at Bridgeport Hospital? I'm looking into Cardiology there.

i had a kick butt rotation in internal medicine, like the first poster. but you won't do procedures, b/c the interns will fight over them. you might get in some ABGs (arterial blood gases), but no central lines, unless the people around you are willing to let you learn.

as far as neuro goes, i knew of one girl who couldn't ever get ahold of the neurologist, so she sat around most the time. i guess it leaves time for study

Yup getting procedures was hard, but if you stayed overnight on the ICU floors, you could pretty much get to do whatever you wanted.

As far as neurology, I didn't do the rotation. However the GI rotation was kickass; because I had great attendings and also lucked out by getting a great resident. We would basically take consults all morning until noon conference, and then round on old patients or watch procedures in the afternoon.
