It depends on the state... You need a license in the state where you moonlight. Depending on where you are and where you went to school, you may or may not be able to do it.
Also, you don't have much time, and the time you do have still has to be under your 80 hours. We all know how those forms get filled out though, so... I suppose it can be done.
In most programs, you won't have the time until you're third year (for much of anything beyond 100 bucks) and by then, it's a drop in the debt bucket. Where this really helps is for people in fellowship who are PGY-4-8. My brother in law made over 90K last year as a Heme-Onc fellow, because he can pick up clinic time in IM, and the VA pays him for a fraction of the HO work he does there. As a resident, it's getting pretty hard.
Most of the moonlighting used to be done in the ER. Unless your BC/BE in EM, then this is also out. What we're being offered is on a VERY part-time basis at 65/hr. It's working a student health center. Other offers were for 3rd years to do student physicals for 125/day 2-3 time/year.
It's almost not even worth thinking about.
