    What does moonlighting mean

I know this may sound terribly ignorant, but what does moonlighting mean? When does one do it, do you have to do it, or is it something to do in spare time ? Don't get it.

there is a moonlighting forum here which should answer your questions

basically it's working extra, outside the framework of your residency/fellowship...usually at a greatly increased ( 50-100$/hr ) hourly rate

I know a lot of residents who moonlight in low volume ER's. They are able to obtain malpractice coverage through the agency. It never hurts to talk with a recruiter to see if you are eligible/interested in the work they have available. I'm and EMT and have recently begun working with a medical group as a recruiter, i'd love to talk to any of you about what your options are and at the very least offer some advice on the best way to approach moonlighting cautiously. Give me a call at 888-264-0330 if you wanna talk.

Moonlighting is doing extra works on the side while in residency or fellowship. You get paid fairly well (almost like an attending) per shift.

Moonlighting is any job you have secondary to your primary job. It doesn't have to relate to your main job.

"John is a bank teller but moonlights as a bartender in the evenings to pay for his college tuition".

Technically, it doesn't really have to be a night job either. John could moonlight as a mail carrier just as easily to earn his college tuition.

I know of several residents who made $200,000 per year in addition to their residency salary from moonlighting. Of course this is only available for US Citizens.
